Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital program, is dedicated to healing the invisible wounds - including post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, anxiety, depression, co-occurring substance use disorder, family relationship challenges and other issues associated with Military service - for Veterans of all eras, Service Members, Military Families and Families of the Fallen through world-class clinical care, wellness, education, and research.

The Home Base Program is currently searching for a full-time Expressive Art Therapist to lead art therapy groups in the ICP and OP clinical services. Art therapists assist their clients in alleviating distress, reducing physical, emotional, behavioral, and social impairment, and promoting positive development, through engagement with the creative arts.

This position is a hybrid eligible position and located in Charlestown, MA.

PRINICPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To provide clinical art therapy services to patients and families in the Home Base clinical programs.
  • Populations served include all age groups.  The Art Therapist must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate art activities to the age of the patients served.
  • Facilitate weekly Expressive Arts Workshops offered through the Home Base program.
  • Maintain appropriate charting records and periodic reports on patient progress within MGH's electronic medical record system
  • Responsible for maintaining art supplies inventory for groups 
  • Collaborates with Home Base's Director of Health and Wellness to further expand art therapy program
  • Adheres to the code of ethics and standards of practice as set forth by the American Art Therapy Association

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: 

  • The capacity to understand the patient's needs and situation, to in turn present information about expressive arts therapy clearly and appropriately.
  • Knowledge of art therapy theory, techniques and practices.
  • An understanding, knowledge, and experience of working with a variety of art media and techniques. 
  • Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate art activities to the age of the patients served.
  • Demonstration of a professional and caring approach with patients in all phases of illness and treatment.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work with a diverse population.
  • Knowledge and good practice of universal precautions, including hand hygiene.
  • Follows established procedures and policies related to the care of veterans and their families.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Adheres to the code of ethics and standards of practice as set forth by the American Art Therapy Association, maintaining patient confidentiality and sensitivity to all issues encountered with patients. 
  • Must possess the ability to provide and to create for patients and their families, a safe environment, in which to effect change and growth on a personal level, through the use of art materials. 
  • The ability to design and implement art activities, which have the potential to serve as a diversional activity during treatment, alleviate or reduce stress, and promote positive emotions and attitudes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree in Art Therapy or related field from an accredited university
  • Registered Art Therapist (ATR) or working towards registration with the American Art Therapy Association (AATA).
  • Board certified Art Therapist or working towards board certification with the American Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB)
  • An understanding, experience, and knowledge of working with a variety of art media and techniques.
  • LMHC, LCSW, or LICSW preferred
