General Summary:
Under general supervision instructs students in JROTC skills. The JROTC program's stated mission is to "Motivate Young People to Become Better Citizens." This will be accomplished by following the prescribed Program of Instruction (POI) provided by the respective branch of service of each JROTC program. The JROTC POI provides both required and elective class material that will instill in students in secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment through leadership positions and extracurricular activities.
Essential Functions:
  • Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One.
  • Effectively interacts, communicates and collaborates with students, parents, administrators, colleagues and other stakeholders to foster student learning.
  • Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive learning environment for all students; supervises students in classroom activities and in other areas as assigned; maintains positive behavior support and classroom management systems.
  • Demonstrates a variety of 21st century teaching skills to foster independent, creative, critical thinkers and problem solvers.
  • Designs and facilitates engaging, high level, sophisticated learning experiences and applications appropriate to prepare students for a 21st century global, knowledge-based society.
  • Teaches concepts and skills in JROTC which may include citizenship; leadership education; oral and written communication; military history; first aid; personal finance; map reading; and the rights, responsibilities, and privileges of being an American citizen, etc.
  • Instructs students in the proper use, care, operation and safe handling of air rifles.
  • Participates in fund raising activities.
  • Supervises activities of assigned Instructors which involve such duties as planning and reviewing work, and providing instruction, guidance and training.
  • Encourages students to complete high school and pursue higher education goals.
  • Demonstrates and evaluates the effectiveness of both formative and summative assessments; collaborates with other staff members to analyze assessment data in relation to student learning and develops instructional strategies to close the learning and performance gap; evaluates contributions in group projects.
  • Networks with school personnel regarding scheduling issues as appropriate.
  • Prepares various records and forms such as lesson plans, daily and weekly activity plans, assessments, material requisitions, discipline reports, etc.
  • Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
  • Organizes classrooms, drills, field studies, practical labs and other settings for daily instruction.
  • Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Selects, requests, and maintains an inventory of textbooks, military equipment, instructional aides, technology tools, equipment and supplies needed for daily activities; provides for safe storage and proper use of all military equipment, tools and materials.
  • Effectively uses personal computing devices and software applications for the management of student records, instructional efficiency, and professional development.
  • Meets with parents, administrators and school counselors as needed to discuss student performance, social and emotional needs, behavior, and personal and academic goals and expectations, etc.; issues reports in accordance with school board policy to inform parents/guardians of students' progress; suggests interventions as appropriate.
  • Performs other related duties as required and in accordance with service specific JROTC contracts.

Minimum Education/Work Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college
  • Certification as a certified JROTC instructor
  • Status as a retired officer having a variety of military assignments with several assignments in leadership positions
  • Valid South Carolina driver's license

Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the school district that pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of school policies, procedures, and operations. Ability to demonstrate proper maintenance, safe operation, and utilization of equipment, materials, and supplies used in daily activities. Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy in exercising duties. Ability to anticipate work to be completed and to complete work without the need for direct supervision. Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student records and information. Ability to interact and communicate effectively and professionally with supervisors, co-workers, teachers, students, and the general public.
Working Conditions:
Conducts duties in a classroom and outside environment which may include occasional exposure to noise from air rifles and heights from student confidence building training. Requires constant attention working with students. Physical demands include classroom work requiring occasional lifting/moving of items up to fifty pounds and administration and participation in a physical conditioning program. Occasional local and overnight travel required. Job requires the operation of general office and technology equipment and military equipment which includes air rifles.
Responsibility:
Responsible for supervision of students in classrooms, field studies, outdoor training environments and other instructional settings. Responsible for maintenance and inventory of military equipment and clothing. Responsible for reporting equipment malfunctions and safety issues.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the school board's policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
