The Extension Agent is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating an outcome-based program addressing issues and opportunities identified in Stanly and Anson Counties. The agent in this position must have technical competence in Field Crops and in the delivery of formal and non-formal education programs, develop and work with stakeholder-based committees that provide direction for Extension programs; work with community organizations to effectively link Extension with local resources and clients; and effectively recruit, train, and manage volunteers to expand outreach efforts.
This position is based in Stanly County.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.
Agriculture is the largest economic driver for both Anson and Stanly County and our farmers depend on the most up-to-date research to ensure their crops are profitable and sustainable. Other Work/Responsibilities:

Agriculture continues to be the number one industry in both Anson and Stanly County. Soybeans, Corn, Wheat, and Cotton the main crops and our growers need up to date research and education to continue to be viable.
The agent will be responsible for providing leadership in in planning, implementing, evaluating, and marketing educational programs and activities with measurable impacts in the areas of field crop production. Programs will address current and future agricultural production, natural resource issues, challenges including alternative farm enterprises, and business management.
The person selected for this position will be responsible for educational programming and technical assistance related to all phases of field crop production.
The person selected for this position will also be able to conduct on-farm research with producers in Anson and Stanly County.

  • Develop and maintain organized Agriculture programs that follow North Carolina Cooperative Extension policies, and guidelines.

  • Determine clientele needs and impact by assessing and evaluating the agriculture program and services on a regular basis.

  • Work collaboratively with other Extension programs, staff, agencies and community organizations to meet the needs of the agricultural community.

  • Network with neighboring Agents, University Specialist, and local Ag Producers to plan and implement innovative research test plots, and educational field days. Promote agriculture in the community.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Monday - Friday- 8 AM - 5 PM Business Hours - Evenings and Weekends as required

Minimum Experience/Education:

One of the following educational requirements: – A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) in the job related field. The minimum GPA requirement will be waived for NCCE Program Associates with a Bachelor’s degree. – A Bachelor’s degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one of the degrees in the job related field, or – Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one of the degrees in the job related field. Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the County Extension Area Agent’s job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The County Extension Area Agent is eligible to become a member of the non-tenure track/special faculty at North Carolina State University. The County Extension Area Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of county Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The County Extension Area Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and county leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension.

Department Required Skills:

A Bachelor’s degree crop science, agronomy or an area related to the agent’s assigned responsibilities is required.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education:

A Master’s degree is preferred.

Required License or Certification:

Valid Driver’s License and reliable, personal transportation required. Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.

Anticipated Hiring Range:
