Swim Instructors are responsible for the delivery of group, private (1-on-1), and semi-private (2-on-1) swim lessons for students of all ages and abilities across the Association’s pools. All courses must be taught in accordance with the standards and policies provided by Reston Association. Instructors must maintain a safe and positive learning environment using age-appropriate progressive teaching techniques and strategies to engage all students.
Instructors are issued small items for use in class and are expected to consistently provide those items for use in class. Ensuring proper use of equipment by students, reporting any missing or damaged equipment, and keeping a neat teaching space are required. Instructors are required to write progressive and comprehensive lesson plans for group lessons to ensure curriculum is covered in the allotted timeframe. Instructors must attend an initial orientation, communicate regularly with the Swim Lesson Coordinator, attend regular meetings throughout the season to submit attendance or student performance records, and training. Administrative responsibilities include taking attendance at group lessons, accurately reporting time spent on instruction, and communication with students/clients. Instructors are responsible for scheduling and communicating promptly with their clients for private lesson instruction. Instructors must be passionate and enthusiastic about swimming and water safety, communicate effectively with their students and the public, and have sound knowledge of proper swimming techniques and progression of swimming skills.
Licensed pool operators and certified lifeguards are present and provide facility supervision during all lessons. Instructors are not required to complete any Pool Operator responsibilities or serve as lifeguard-on-duty while teaching their classes. Lessons are not permitted outside staffed hours. Courses are conducted in an outdoor environment in unheated water.
