ABOUT THE ROLE

Under the direction and guidance of the Aquatics Director/Manager, and consistent with the mission and policies of the YMCA of Western North Carolina, the Aquatics Coordinator will oversee day to day operations of designated YMCA aquatic facilities. The Aquatics Coordinator ensures the quality of service and safety of all members and program participants within the pool area. The Aquatics Coordinator will assist with aquatic safety checks, be a leader and role model for lifeguard staff, assist in customer service needs regarding members, and maintain pool records and certifications. The Aquatic Coordinator will assist and support the Aquatic Director/Manager in team management including but not limited to annual reviews and corrective action. The Aquatics Coordinator will assist in program growth and maintaining a welcoming and inclusive environment.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Scheduling of lifeguards and swim instructors.
  • Assist aquatic supervisor with annual reviews, coaching sessions, and corrective action when necessary.
  • Provide coverage as needed in the event of inadequate staffing and lifeguard breaks.
  • Provide orientation and ongoing support and supervision for aquatic staff.
  • Communicate with swim instructors and participants to coordinate private swim lessons.
  • Oversee day of event operations including but not limited to community swim, swim lessons, swim team, and camp.
  • Performs and documents drop drills and aquatic quick checks for the aquatics team. Implements training program for aquatic staff who do not meet requirements of drop drills.
  • Inspects and maintains all emergency equipment and pool equipment. Maintains and documents inventory of first aid and training supplies.
  • Know and understand all aquatics policies and procedures, including the emergency action plan. Ensure that all rules and procedures are always consistently enforced.
  • In the absence of the Aquatics Director provide overall direction, coordination and management of the department.
  • 50% of aquatic coordinator time will be spent in direct service as the lifeguard on duty, gate attendant, swim instructor, or a combination of both.
  • Always champions the YMCA culture, continually provides outstanding customer service, and strives to develop committed members and program participants.
    • Actively participates in membership retention and appreciation efforts when applicable.
    • Trains new lifeguard staff on how to build relationships with members and how the YMCA culture is relevant in the Aquatics Department.
  • Assist in membership retention by interacting and building relationships with members and guests.
  • Supports the YMCA's Annual Campaign through donor stewardship.
  • Participates in the budgeting process within their service line/department and serves as a good steward of association resources.
  • Communicate effectively with support services, Executive Director and other program leaders to coordinate programs and the needs of groups.
  • Perform other duties as required

ABOUT YOU

Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Must have a minimum of 24 months of lifeguarding experience and
  • Previous leadership experience in aquatics or nonprofit management preferred
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must hold, or be able to obtain within 90 days of hire, and maintain current certifications in the following:
    • CPR for the Professional Rescuer
    • Community First Aid
    • Emergency Oxygen Administration (O2)
    • Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
    • YMCA Lifeguarding/Red Cross Lifeguard
    • Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor or be willing to take course for certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite
  • Strong communication skills to convey expectations and safety regulations and coordinate with a diverse, multigenerational staff.
  • Leadership abilities for scheduling, supervising, coaching, and conducting reviews of lifeguards and swim instructors.
  • Organizational skills to oversee various aquatic events and handle day-of-event operations.
  • Adaptability to perform different roles (e.g., lifeguard, gate attendant, swim instructor) and address unexpected situations during events.
  • Proficiency in emergency preparedness, including drop drills, aquatic quick checks, and implementing training programs for staff.
  • Problem-solving skills to address inadequate staffing, lifeguard breaks, and unexpected challenges during operations.
  • Inspection and maintenance skills for emergency and pool equipment, along with inventory management of supplies.

  • Remain alert without lapses in consciousness for extended periods of time.
  • Lift 50+ lbs. from the floor and 200+ lbs. in rescue situations.
  • Sit for extended periods of time, including in an elevated chair.
  • Ascend and descend ladders.
  • Communicate verbally with good voice projection and clarity.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in an aquatic environment. (Significant background noise may exist in the aquatic environment.)
  • Observe all areas of the aquatic area, including the pool deck, water surface, and pool bottom
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Bend or stoop to reach various height levels
