THE POSITION
The Department of Environmental Protection is looking for someone wo is committed to safeguarding the well-being of Pennsylvania's residents and environment. You will play a crucial role in the Standards Section of the Water Quality Division, ensuring that the state's water quality standards align with relevant state and federal regulations, as well as current scientific knowledge. DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Your primary responsibilities of this role involve supporting the three main pillars of water quality standards, which are protected water uses, water quality criteria, and an antidegradation policy. This includes tasks such as developing, interpreting, and maintaining water quality standards to protect fish, aquatic life, human health, and other uses of Commonwealth surface waters. Additionally, your role involves reviewing proposed state and federal regulations related to water quality issues and preparing draft comments and recommendations for supervisor review. You may also participate in regulatory development committees as necessary.
Another aspect of your role is assisting in the development of guidance and regulations for the implementation of water quality standards and criteria, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and requirements. You will also be responsible for responding to requests for current or historical information on stream use designations, water quality criteria, antidegradation, and other components of water quality standards. Furthermore, your role includes reviewing and providing guidance on draft study plans for the development of site-specific water quality criteria, as well as assisting in the review and approval of final site-specific criteria reports.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • This position requires travel for conferences, trainings, meetings, and field work.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days a week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • One year as an Aquatic Biologist 1 (commonwealth title); or
  • One year of professional experience in aquatic biology or water pollution biology and a bachelor's degree with a major in a biological science, natural science, environmental science, or natural resource management, including or supplemented by six college credits in freshwater aquatic biology, aquatic ecology, aquatic botany, water pollution biology, entomology, limnology, or closely related aquatic science coursework; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes six college credits in freshwater aquatic biology, aquatic ecology, aquatic botany, water pollution biology, entomology, limnology, or closely related aquatic science coursework.

Special Requirement:
  • This position requires possession of a valid motor vehicle license.
