Apprentice Mechanic or Mechanic (Heavy Duty)
Employment Type: 0 - Full-time Regular
Pay Range: $44,747.00 - 85,715.00
Location: Castle Rock, CO

This position will be responsible for preventive maintenance and mechanical repairs on all of theCounty vehicles and equipment.
Qualifications, education and experience as it relates to the position will be taken into consideration when determining hiring salary.
Apprentice Mechanic: Generally, the hiring range is $44,747-$55,934 annually.
Mechanic: Generally, the hiring range is $55,750-$69,688 annually.
Work Schedule: 4 ten-hour shifts (either Monday-Thursday or Tuesday-Friday)
Annual Uniform Allowance = $150.00
Monthly Tool Allowance = $100.00

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The followingexamples are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.)
  • Change lubricants, filters and performs other preventivemaintenance functions as necessary. Performs safety inspections on any/all County equipment.
  • General repairs on automotive and heavy constructionequipment to include the repair of gasoline and diesel engines, repair ofelectrical systems including lights, repair of hydraulic systems, and repair/adjustment to drive train and brakesystems.
  • Perform diagnostic road tests. Travel to various locations for tiremaintenance, repair work, drop-off and pick-up of vehicles, parts and/ordelivery of fluids and equipment.
  • Makes repairs to snow and ice equipment
  • Inspects defective and malfunctioning equipment and performsdiagnostic tests using diagnostic software and other equipment as required.
  • Performs service calls in the field.
  • Performs duties and training in both the light-duty andheavy-duty shops.
  • On-Call during snow season to support the operations of snowremoval fleet and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
  • Repairs and replaces tires on all equipment.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Apprentice Mechanic:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • One year of automotive/diesel mechanical experience preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Mechanic:
  • Ahigh school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Threeyears of automotive/diesel mechanical experience, five years preferred.
  • Preferredexperience with computerized maintenance software.
  • Preferredexperience with Force Controls.
  • Acombination of education and experience may be considered

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge: Working knowledge of design, adjustment,operation, maintenance, and repair of automotive equipment. Working knowledgeof standard practices and procedures, and hazards and safety precaution of themechanical trade
Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents suchas safety rules, operating and maintenance manuals, electrical and hydraulicsemantics. Skill in the use of mechanical tools, materials, and testingequipment. Basic computer skills.
Abilities: Ability to apply common sense understandingto carry out instructions. Ability to work effectively with coworkers. Abilityto prioritize tasks. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver License upon hire. Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment.
  • The ability to possess a State of Colorado Class (A) Commercial Driver License with tanker endorsement after hire. Incumbents in this position must meet the Department of Transportation physical exam and drug and alcohol testing requirements.
  • This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check including fingerprinting through a national database.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
PhysicalWork Environment: Work is generally performed in the Fleet shop;services and repairs may be required to be completed in the field from a mobileservice truck. May be on-call in response to snow removal operations.
Physical Demands: Mustbe able to regularly lift or move more than 100 pounds and perform strenuousphysical labor for up to 8-10 hours each day. (Up to 12 hours during times ofsnow removal or other circumstances that require extended shifts.) Alsorequires frequent bending, squatting, standing, climbing, kneeling andwalking. May be required to occasionallywork in small, hard to reach spaces.
Material and Equipment DirectlyUsed: Tools typically used by journeymanmechanic must be provided by the incumbent. All specialty and diagnosticequipment are provided by the County.

In the event of an emergency/disaster in or near the County, all County employees are expected to make every effort to be available to assist the County Manager, Elected/Appointed Officials and Department Directors to ensure the continued operation of any and all necessary County functions. This may mean being available to perform additional duties and hours beyond what is normally required. In the event that an exempt employee does work more than 40 hours a week in support of County operations during an emergency, such employee may receive overtime or other appropriate wage compensation in accordance with existing County policies or at the discretion of the County.
