SUMMARY:
The Machine Operator Apprenticeship is athree-year competency-basedprogram that is one tracked focused to support Philly Shipyard's pre-fabrication needs. Starting out, apprentices will work alongside general/ untrackedapprentices for the first 12 weeks learning and experiencing the shipyards environment and activities. Following the 12- week immersion, Machine Operator apprentices will report to and begin learningon one machine; they will not acquire classroom training in this role. As they master their skills, apprentices will then move on to learn and operate other machines throughout the yard, ultimately becoming multi-skilled Machine Operators. Due to the amount ofhands-ontraining Machine Operator apprentices receive, they will remain in production for the full duration of their three-year apprentice trainingperiod. Apprentices who opt intothe Machine Operator apprentice role will NOT have the ability to transfer to other apprentice positions while enrolled in the program and will remain a Machine Operator apprentice until program graduation. At that point, individuals, (no longer apprentices) will move into their trusted roles asMachine Operators for the duration of their employment with PSI.
Machine operator apprentices will train on first-shift and once deemed proficient, they will moveand begin working on second-shift. The scheduled second shift working hoursare Monday - Friday from 2:45 - 11:15 p.m. The second shift roleoffers a 4% differential if the position is accepted.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each
essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skill,
and/or ability required.
• Work in accordance with PSI's CORE values.
• Ensure that all PSI safety procedures, rules and regulations are followed and met.
• Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Learn cutting and grinding principles and techniques.
• Review setup sheet, drawing and specifications to determine setup procedure and dimensions
of finished workpiece.
• Align, position, secure and fit parts and panels at machine according to the setup instructions.
• Inspect, maintain and operate machines according to set procedures.
• Inspect, perform necessary repairs and report all quality issues to supervisor.
• Maintain written logs of daily operation as required.
• Maintain consumable on hand inventory as required.
• Measure and inspect workpiece for conformance to specifications and standards as required.
• Notify supervisor of all machine discrepancies, issues and machine malfunctions.
• Adjust machine control parameters according to specifications when automatic programming is
faulty or machine malfunctions.
• Maintain machinery, equipment and a safe/clean work environment.
• Attend all assigned instructor-led and online assigned Related Technical Training (RTI) courses.
• Perform other related duties as required and assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILTY
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• High School or GED Equivalent
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Environmental exposures are similar to those found in most heavy industrial settings and may include
noise, heat, cold, vibration, dust, fumes and smoke. Work may be carried on indoors or outdoors, and
may involve exposure to inclement weather conditions.
*Philly Shipyard is a TOBACCO FREE facility.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to
successfully perform the essential functions of this job. A range of motion sufficient to perform general
lifting, carrying, bending, stooping, climbing, working at heights, extended walking or standing, etc. is
required. Employment in this position is contingent upon passing the medical examination. Reasonable
accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
All apprentices must be clean-shaven for respirator fit test and use.
POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
This is an onsite, full-time, safety-sensitive position. Standard days and hours of work vary by
department, days and hours determined by department schedules.
