Job Title:Apprentice Lineperson
Salary Grade/Level: I-5, II-6, III & IV-9

JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary/Objective
Serves as an apprentice to a lineman by constructing, replacing, and maintaining electric distribution lines, structures, and equipment. Actively engages in apprentice program acquiring First Class lineman qualification and skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Digging pole and anchor holes.
  • Setting and aligning pole and anchors.
  • Making up and installing all types of guys.
  • Stringing, sagging and tying-in conductors of all sizes and types.
  • Installing and connecting transformers, fuse cutouts, arrestor, switches, oil circuit reclosers and sectionalizers.
  • Framing and installing pole assemblies, on the ground or in the air, performing work in a trainee capacity in the construction, maintenance operations and retirement of electric distribution system, all in accordance with RUS specifications.
  • Loading and unloading poles, transformers, and other material.
  • Assisting in splicing broken conductors, resagging broken lines, replacing damaged electrical apparatus and facilities, and performing other construction retirements, and operation and maintenance work, as required.
  • Patrolling lines when required, replacing defective equipment, tightening hardware and guys and resagging secondary and services.
  • Installing underground primary and secondary cables
  • Installing and connecting underground transformers, switch gear, and secondary junctions.
  • Learning to perform first-aid and artificial respiration and becoming familiar with pole-top rescue.
  • Staying alert for all hazards that exist in the form of falls, electric shock, electric flash, falling objects and traffic.
  • Keeping familiar with the use of safety equipment and always follows all safety procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Service work as required.
  • Progression at an acceptable pace through all four levels of apprenticeship.
  • Participates in safety and job training meetings.
  • Participates in Annual Meeting as required.
  • Is subject to on-call scheduling and over time as required.
  • Establishes and maintains contacts and relationships for the purpose of coordination and communication with internal customers, external customers, government agencies, and the general public as appropriate.

Supervisory Responsibility
None.
Work Environment
The employee will be working during inclement/extreme weather conditions – heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, high winds, day and night. The employee will be exposed to energized electrical lines and operate heavy equipment and exposed to loud noise.
Physical Demands
The employee will be required to walk or stand, use hands, fingers to handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms, climb or balance; stoop, kneel crouch or crawl. The employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
Travel
Periodic travel to state and local destinations, as well as some interstate travel is required.
Required Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or GED.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Two-year technical degree with required specialized training (live-line school, underground and overhead school).
  • Knowledge of RUS construction specifications.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) / Ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
  • First Aid and CPR Certified.
  • Climber qualified and bucket rescue.
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States.
