The Position
Incumbent works under the direction of a Licensed Facility Engineer or designee, operating and maintaining heating, electrical, air conditioning, plumbing, and other critical building systems.
Essential Functions
  • Perform maintenance activities on critical building systems and other equipment (e.g. boilers, air conditioning, plumbing, appliances).
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, other agencies, and the public.
  • Comply with Civil Service policies and regulations, collective bargaining agreements, County policies, department policies and laws to create a cooperative, safe, respectful and quality work environment.
  • Adhere to safety and maintenance protocols/methods.
  • Inspect boilers/chillers, pipelines and operating equipment for steam and chilled water, domestic water, air or fuel leaks, or defective parts according to Preventive Maintenance Program.
  • Tests boilers/chillers and associated equipment recording test instrument readings and other information.
  • Inspect plumbing and pipe fittings for leaks and repairs reporting any major equipment failure to Chief Engineer.
  • Assist with major repairs of boiler/chiller and major other equipment.
  • Requisition, parts and supplies needed to make minor/routine repairs to equipment.
  • Clean and repair boilers, boiler tubes, boiler stacks, and other equipment.
  • Perform repairs on other small equipment (e.g. appliances, motors, switches).
  • Safely operate a motor vehicle when traveling on County business.
  • Report to work with regular, consistent attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and directed.

Education and Work Experience and Other Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must obtain a Third Grade Engineer Certificate within 18 months of hire required.
  • Supplemental training in plumbing, electrical, or HVAC preferred.
  • Valid driver's license upon hire and maintained throughout employment required.
  • Completion of a pre-employment criminal record check and conditional offer drug screen and physical assessment required.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.   • Work is generally performed both inside and outside in varying environmental conditions (e.g. adverse weather conditions, extreme temperatures). Incumbents will wear personal protective equipment while performing certain duties. Noise level is usually moderate and occasionally loud. Work hours are typically standard day-shift hours; however, schedule may vary (e.g. days, hours, weekends, overtime/extra hours). Work involves potential exposure to vibration, dust, fumes, mechanical/electrical hazards, chemicals and biohazards. Work may be stressful when dealing with time constraints, multiple/changing priorities, limited resources and uncooperative/irate individuals.
  • Work requires physical activity including extended periods of walking, standing, occasional climbing, reaching, carrying, balancing, kneeling, crouching and bending. Incumbent must have the agility, balance and strength to maneuver around obstacles and access all building areas. Work also requires the ability to frequently lift and/or carry objects weighing up to 80 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
  • Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close, distance and color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges. Incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computers and other equipment.
