THE POSITION

Are you ready to help protect Pennsylvania's natural resources? The Department of Agriculture is seeking a passionate and motivated Apiary Inspector to join our team! In this position, you will perform critical work in enforcing PA Bee Law and preserving the health and wellbeing of bees against harmful pests and diseases. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will provide office, field, and laboratory support for our Apiary Program in the Department of Agriculture. As an Apiary Inspector, you will be responsible for contacting beekeepers to set up appointments to inspect their bee colonies for presence of harmful pests and diseases. You will perform and analyze field tests, as well as collect samples to submit to the State Apiarist to confirm the presence of honey bee pathogens, pests, or other problems. Additionally, you will issue reports of apiary inspections, report results of laboratory tests to the owner of sampled bees, and assist the State Apiarist in enforcing the PA Bee Law.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Seasonal, full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • This position is Home Headquartered within Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York Counties.
  • Salary:In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • One year of experience as a beekeeper or in related work affording a knowledge of bee handling and bee disease or one year of college course work, majoring in a biological field including a course in apiculture; or 6 months beekeeping experience and a beekeeping short course; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training.

Additional Requirements:
  • You must possess a valid Pennsylvania Class C driver's license.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
