POSITION SUMMARY: The Special Education Coordinator provides leadership in developing and supporting the division's Special Education programming and services primarily at the elementary level.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provides Special Education assistance regarding programming/regulations to teachers, administrators and staff in assigned buildings.
- Has significant knowledge of Special Education law including IDEA, Virginia Regulations and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
- Reviews IEPs for legal compliance, appropriate educational programming and oversees the implementation of those IEPs for all students in buildings assigned
- Has significant knowledge in all aspects of elementary education with a comprehensive understanding of early literacy and numeracy teaching and learning.
- Collaborate closely with content specialists within the division.
- Provides assistance to multidisciplinary teams which determine Special Education eligibility and educational programming for students with disabilities.
- Coordinates activities related to the participation of children with disabilities in the various assessment programs including VAAP/ VESOL.
- Provides in service training and ongoing coaching to improve staff and building teacher capacity in the area of Special Education including specially designed instruction within inclusive settings, collaboration/co-teaching, improving connections between instruction and goals within IEPs, and new changes that occur because of changes in the Virginia Regulations and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
- Serves as a resource to IEP teams, teachers, administrators, families, and students in developing and implementing standards based IEPs with appropriate services, goals, and accommodations.

- Provides other Duties deemed appropriate by supervisors
QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least 5 years of experience as a Special Education teacher with experience teaching students with disabilities in a public school setting- experience teaching at the elementary level is strongly preferred.
- Special Education Teaching License-(Postgraduate Professional)
- An endorsement in Administration and Supervision is preferred
- Related degrees/endorsements will be considered
- Experience coaching and developing school staff in all areas of Special Education.
- In good standing from previous position or division
- Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Familiarity with racial equity and inclusion frameworks.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students, staff, and community members. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; and subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Regular contact with staff members is required. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of licensed personnel.
