JOB DESCRIPTION
TRAINER
SUPERVISOR: Sr. Trainer /Assistant Curator/ Curator/ General Curator.
STATUS: Hourly, Full-Time.
Summary Description:
Trainer II participates in, and is aware of all aspects of the mammals/bird department. This includes maintaining all department protocols, adhering to policies and fulfilling daily responsibilities concerning the care and training of the animal collection.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Professional Animal Care
- Report to work location by scheduled time.
- Maintain clean, professional appearance.
- Perform daily husbandry routines as trained.
- Assist with training interns.
- Assist with animal treatments.
- Maintain detailed records of animal training sessions, observations, medical concerns, and enrichment.
- Effective communication between all mammal and bird staff.
- Participate in educational presentations.
- Perform duties of Trainer I as needed.
- Ability to train new behaviors.
- Basic knowledge of animal behavior and training.
- Basic knowledge of enrichment.
Communication
- Conduct yourself in helpful, patient manner with all public.
- Participate in various public presentations, with or with out animals.
- Interact with professionals and special guests as directed.

College degree in Biology, Zoology, Animal Science or related field preferred, or equivalent animal care experience or a combination of education and experience. 3 years training experience. Must be organized, self-motivated, with desire to see completion of projects. Must have valid drivers license and reliable transportation. Must be self-motivated, with high desire to provide the best care available to animals. Must be observant. Must work with other employees in a polite, patient manner.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Subject to possibility of bites, stings. Work in water, both man- made and natural. Heavy lifting (50 pounds or more), walking and working within a wet environment. Outdoor work on occasion, under variety of conditions: cold weather, hot weather, rain, mud, and dry land. Work with large carnivores – in a protected contact environment. Must be available for overtime, both non-emergency and emergency situations.
