SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE

Must be an experienced manager and animal care provider. Duties include managing the operations of the shelter and working directly with the Board of Directors and Volunteers. The Shelter Manager/Director is responsible for the cost effective, sanitary, maintenance, and humane operations of the organization; will oversee all aspects of animal care, intakes, outcomes (adoptions, transports, etc), programs (foster, volunteer, spay/neuter, TNR, and new program development), selection/training/supervision of staff/volunteers, to ensure quality, life-long care for all animals that become the responsibility of Moore County Friends of Animals. The Animal Shelter Manager/Director upholds the mission of MCFOA, supports its goals, and works closely with the Board of Directors to provide informed decision-making. Serves as a dynamic liaison between the staff, Board of Directors, and the community. Responsible for being the shelter’s visible spokesperson and will have a unique opportunity to positively influence the community at large. Works closely with the staff/volunteers to oversee all aspects of animal care, ensuring that their welfare is a top priority. Maintains the budget for shelter income and expenses as set by the Board of Directors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (include but are not limited to listed tasks)

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide leadership, direction and guidance in a positive and professional manner for a well-developed volunteer support organization that is critical to the center’s success.
  • Oversee all employees and volunteers including hiring, scheduling, conducting performance evaluations, meetings, promotions and terminations.
  • Understand federal, state, county and local laws regarding shelter administration.
  • Review and guide the implementation of a strategic plan of animal care programs, processes and guidelines; balancing legal requirements and industry

best practices within an approved budget.

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Handles internal and external conflict management and resolution
  • Negotiate and manage contracts and grants required for the daily operations of

the center.

  • Effectively manage the emotional aspect of working in and leading a team in an Animal Shelter environment in a positive and professional manner.
  • Manages the day to day operations of the shelter’s strategic and operational responsibilities for MCFOA’s staff, programs, public education, and policies and protocols
  • Maintain and ensure proper record keeping including maintaining records, updating website, software and pet adoption sites, and ensure data management to measure success of operations
  • Monitor inventory of supplies and restock needed supplies.
  • Maintain animal care and health by implementing THE FIVE FREEDOMS; administer daily and monthly medication as needed.
  • Perform intakes and outcomes of animals through the shelter following proper intake/outcome protocols outlined in the SOP handbook.
  • Monitor kennel security; Implement improvements.
  • Manage incoming monies and expenses and maintain a working relationship with the Board of Directors Treasurer to assure the budget is well managed.
  • Manage emergencies with the guidance of a veterinarian, establish a plan of action for the pet.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the shelter and all living spaces.
  • Work with the Board of Directors to generate revenue and fundraising activities to support existing program and operational needs.
  • Work with the Board of Directors to develop the annual operating budget, strategic plan, and annual report.
  • Prepare reports for monthly Board Meetings, including information on shelter intake, adoptions, program data, etc.
  • Develop, oversee, and promote current and new programs to increase awareness of our mission and animal welfare needs in our community.
  • Participate in community outreach programs, special events, and shelter events

  • Adapt to changing technologies and learn functionality of new equipment and systems.
  • Safely operate a vehicle.
  • Work independently without supervision and as part of a team.

QUALIFICATIONS

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to sit at a confined work station for extended periods while performing essential duties.
  • On a continuous basis, sit at a desk and in meetings for long periods of time. Intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding desk, perform simple grasping and fine manipulation, use telephone and communicate through written means
  • Run, walk and stand during kennel cleaning and animal handling activities; bend, squat, kneel and twist; climb stairs and/or ladders while performing daily kennel/ Animal Shelter functions; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; and regularly carry weight of 35 pounds or less and intermittently carry weight of 50 pounds; walk on uneven ground.
  • While performing the duties of this job the person is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, drive, use hands and fingers, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, grasp, hold, and manipulate tools, talk, and hear. The person is occasionally required to climb, balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. See in the normal visual range with or without correction. Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade or higher.
  • Animal Shelter/Rescue Management experience (preferred)
  • Professional animal care/handling experience (preferred)

LOCATION REQUIREMENT

  • Candidate must live within 30 to 35 minutes of shelter in Lynchburg, TN.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS

  • Must have an acceptable driving record and possess an appropriate Tennessee Driver's License.
