Description
Duties and Responsiblities
- Patrols for the locating of stray and/or unlicensed animals;
- Sets traps and/or catches animals as needed;
- Impounds abandoned and stray dogs and other animals;
- Checks dog licenses;
- Checks dogs and cats for rabies inoculation certificates;
- Issues summons for violations;
- Contacts owners of animals that have bitten an individual and directs quarantine;
- Investigates cruelty and other complaints relating to animals;
- Prepares investigative reports and maintains records;
- Provides educational information to the public on animals and the dangers and precautions of rabies; and
- Testifies in court on cases;
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
- Valid driver's license
- Some experience in work involving the care of animals and dealing with the public.
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:General knowledge of the law, ordinances, and regulations governing the control of animals and the protection of livestock and fowl. General knowledge of the geography of the City. General knowledge of the care, control, and handling of animals. Ability to recognize rabies symptoms and some knowledge of the methods and procedures to be followed. Ability to deal tactfully with the public. Skills to physically perform the duties.

Required Physical Activities: Climbing, flexibility, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, walking and running, crawling, and lifting of animals and equipment. Ability to pass an annual physical examination and physical ability assessment.
Vision Requirements: 20-40 uncorrected and no proven symptoms of being color blind.
EQUIPMENT ESSENTIAL TO DO THE JOB: City vehicle, handgun, shotgun, handcuffs, radio, chemical sprays, traps, cages, animal restraining devices, etc.
