Job description

Job Summary

The Animal Care Technician is responsible for the daily care and well-being of the animals kenneled at the Humane Society of North Central Florida. The position reports to their Shelter Manager.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Adhere to the cleaning procedures as detailed in the Standard Operating Procedures and protocols for Animal Care, kennel maintenance, sanitation, parasite and disease control, and other Animal Care practices within the policies and guidelines of HSNCF
  • Perform the duties as described in the appropriate job assignment description
  • Maintain the animal housing areas and the shelter as a whole in a clean and sanitary condition
  • Observe animals in runs and cages throughout the day, to see that the animals are safe, healthy, and comfortable, ensuring that each animal has access to clean and dry bedding
  • Promptly notify the Vet Team or Shelter Manager if any animal shows signs of stress, injury, or illness
  • Receive and place new animals in a clean cage/run with water, food, and fresh bedding
  • Assist customers in the kennel and cattery seeking to adopt an animal to ensure animals are well-matched with potential adopters
  • Keep accurate records at all times including accurate cages spaces and admitting forms
  • Maintain a humane and caring attitude at all times towards the animals under HSNCF care
  • Show interest and motivation towards personal development with regards to animal welfare
  • Work cooperatively with volunteers in partnership to improve quality of life for resident animals
  • Participate in adoption and community outreach events when assigned
  • Represent HSNCF in a professional manner at all times: in appearance, demeanor, and behavior
  • Demonstrate a low level of absenteeism and lateness as a condition of continued employment
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Skills

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Experience caring for animals in a shelter environment preferred
  • Positive attitude and out-going personality
  • Passion for animal welfare and the mission set forth by HSNCF

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledgeable about proper handling and restraint of animals
  • Ability to retain information, specifically history and medical information related to each HSNCF animal
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and finish tasks in a timely, complete manner
  • Effective communicator both in speech and writing, specifically in tense or emotional situations

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Must be in good health. Any allergic condition that would be aggravated from exposure or through contact with animals or chemicals used to sanitize facilities, vehicles or equipment, is a disqualification.
  • Must stand, walk, bend and stoop frequently to perform duties. Have the ability to perform prolonged strenuous physical activity, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 40 pounds alone or up to 100 pounds with the help of fellow employees for short distances.
  • May be exposed to hostile or abusive members of the public. Must be able to deal with an often times emotion-charged public and carry a fast paced and changing work load which at times can be stressful.
  • By nature of the job, there is occasional exposure with dead, injured, sick, unruly, vicious, and/or dangerous animals in addition to exposure to parasites and infectious diseases.
  • Must be available and willing to work such weekends, holidays, overtime, and attend mandatory training and meetings as the employer determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.
