Job description

Under the general supervision of the Anesthesia Tech Supervisors (day and/or evening/night) and oversight from the Medical Director at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), and following established procedures, assures the quality of service and monitoring patients undergoing anesthesia in all anesthetizing locations throughout the hospital. Maintains, services, sets up, tests, and troubleshoots equipment and provides technical assistance to the Anesthesia staff in the care of patients to provide a safe, orderly, and clean OR environment. The Anesthesia Technician II serves as a source of technical and functional expertise for all operating room locations and must demonstrate the ability to work independently with little supervision.

  • General Responsibilities

  • Provides support to Anesthesiologists in the following areas: AMIGO, Angiography, Cath Lab, CT, Endoscopy, EP Lab, Family Planning Clinic, Operating Room, Radiation Oncology, plus Labor and Delivery.
  • Assists the anesthesia staff in the set up and initialization of hemodynamic monitoring equipment.
  • Assists anesthesiologists in care of patients before, during, and immediately after anesthesia which involves the following: Transfer of patients from stretchers to operating table; attachment of vital signs monitoring equipment; Positioning patients for procedures, i.e spinal, epidurals; Assists in endotracheal intubations by preparing and holding equipment; Assist in transfer from operating room to PACU and/or ICU as needed.
  • Conducts performance tests, performs calibration and first level repairs (i.e. battery changes, cable swapping, monitor checks) of anesthesia equipment.
  • Prepares blood pressure transducers. Calibrates them to the appropriate machine. Sets up IV solutions, and IV infusions.
  • Support Anesthesiologists in OR to perform blood glucose monitoring. Be proficient in procedure for the use, maintenance and storage of Abbot Freestyle precision pro glucometer, testing strips, and quality control solutions.
  • Sets up equipment for use in the work area including, but not limited to, connecting input and output hoses, bronchoscopes, patient warming devices, fluid infusion equipment and assembling breathing circuits. Delivers required anesthesia equipment as needed.
  • Responsible for cleaning, decontaminating, servicing, and maintaining stock levels on Anesthesia case carts before the first case and after each case thereafter to ensure standard supply levels are met. Notifies the Inventory Team when the Anesthesia supply cart caddy does not meet par levels.
  • Troubleshoots routine problems with equipment in OR during use, repairing or replacing as necessary. If replacing, delivers defective equipment to Bio-Medical Engineering.
  • Assist the Bio-Medical Engineering group with various projects, including machine modification and data accumulation.
  • Provides timely and accurate information supporting the procurement of anesthesia supplies.
  • Provides support for training and education of the Anesthesia Technician team.
  • Ability to function independently with little or no supervision.
  • Assists Anesthesia Tech team by rotating coverage of weekends and holidays.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned by the Anesthesia Tech Supervisor or Senior Anesthesia Technician.

Qualifications
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions.

  • Knowledge of physical and mathematical principles.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and other medical center personnel. Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must work cooperatively as part of a team as well as independently.
  • Knowledge of basic anatomy, medical terminology, and treatment procedures commonly used in the administration of anesthesia.

  • Understanding of aseptic and infection control and demonstrates sterile protocols.

  • Demonstrates an awareness of and sensitivity to patient/family rights and cultural/religious beliefs and age-specific needs.

  • Knowledge of HIPPA, Confidentiality and Privacy policies, plus BWH emergency protocols.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/JOB CONDITIONS
  • High stress and fast paced working conditions due to OR environment and anesthetizing locations which may include the following: tight schedules, emergency surgery, and the critical nature of the care provided. Exposure to blood and secretions on contaminated equipment, needles, medications and patients with undiagnosed diseases.
  • Ability to remain on feet for up to 80% of work time and for extended periods of time, lift and carry loads up to 50 pounds, and push rolling equipment weighing several hundred pounds. Ability to work well under extreme pressure and stress. Exposure to the Operating Room environment is a requirement.
  • Required: High School Diploma/GED
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BSLS) certification
  • Prior Anesthesia Technician experience required
  • Preferred: American Society of Anesthesia Technicians / Technologists (ASATT) certification, supervisory experience preferred. Associate's Degree preferred
  • Works within legal, regulatory, accreditation and ethical practice standards relevant to the position and as established by BWH/Partner: follow safe practices required for the position; complies with appropriate BWH and Partners policies and procedures; fulfills any training required by BWH and/or Partners; as appropriate; brings potential matters of non-compliance to the attention of the supervisor or other appropriate hospital staff.
