Job description

Job Title: Anesthesia Tech II

Department: Surgical Services

Reports To: Manager, OR

Job Summary:

The Anesthesia Technician II is a trained individual who participates in preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative duties as they relate to anesthesia. The Anesthesia Tech II has knowledge of the supplies, medications and equipment needed to provide anesthesia to surgical patients. This individual proactively ensures the appropriate supplies and equipment are in place for the patient population served, effectively supporting anesthesiologists, CRNAs, nurses and other members of the patient care team. The Anesthesia Technician II will use a person-centered care approach in performing all duties.

The Anesthesia Tech II has additional responsibilities including training staff in anesthesia practices, assisting with budget review, materials management, and compliance across the system. An Anesthesia Tech II possesses knowledge of advanced anesthetic procedures, interventions and management of patient care during critical events and is able to demonstrate and assist in the application of that knowledge.

Job Responsibilities include:

  • Ability and willingness to perform all duties of an Anesthesia Tech I
  • Mentors and precepts new team members
  • Assists in providing continuing education for any OR staff on anesthesia items
  • Functions as a department resource for clinical practice, operational systems, and provides leadership in implementing the standards of patient care.
  • Assists with budget auditing, budget reporting and financial analysis on anesthesia equipment including material supplies.
  • Assists department leaders with integration of new policies and products.
  • Tracks all anesthesia equipment and works collaboratively with Biomed and Facilities on specific processes replacing, fixing, and reusing all anesthesia items.
  • Participates on the back orders committee, sharing information with Surgical Teams and assisting in finding substitutes or looking for alternatives already in stock.
  • Responsible for the standardization and up-keep of all anesthesia emergency equipment and supplies in multiple locations (Main OR, MCH, Surgicare, Schuyler Hospital).

Requirements:

  • Strong knowledge of the ASA difficult airway algorithm and applies appropriate psychomotor abilities to assist during difficult airway management events.
  • Knowledge and ability to assist in placement of airway devices, including: double lumen tubes, Eschmann stylets, fiberoptic bronchoscopes, supraglottic devices, transtracheal ventilation, video laryngoscopy, etc.
  • Knowledge, comprehension and ability to assist with relation to fluid, whole blood, salvaged blood and blood component management during patient care.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and indications for placement of various invasive pressure monitors, such as arterial pressure and central venous pressure.
  • Ability to speak up about safety issues or changes to practice to enhance safety.
  • Strong knowledge and experience participating in critical even management related to anesthesia.
  • Ability to contribute in a meaningful manner with all team members to foster a positive workplace environment.
  • Maintain standards of service excellence and set a positive example for all surgical staff, patients, families and visitors.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining attention to detail, including the ability to anticipate and prioritize according to needs and changes of each work day.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in multiple modalities, such as verbal, e-mail, presentations, etc. Able to positively communicate with Surgical Services Leadership.
  • Knowledgeable and proficient in the utilization of biotechnology and monitoring equipment.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic and demanding work environment characterized by a rapid pace and high-pressure situations.

Education - High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)

Experience - Minimum of three years of experience in an Anesthesia Tech role.

Certifications - BLS (new hires have the opportunity to obtain certification during introductory period); ACLS, PALS

  • Physical Requirements: Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Requires ability to frequently lift >25 lbs. and occasionally lift >50 lbs. Ability to assist with patient positioning/transfers. Ability to move freely throughout the work setting; respond to emergency situations quickly; kneel, twist and bend, reach overhead heights; and move around in cramped quarters.
  • Sensory: Read handwritten and typewritten materials; and the ability to hear the conversational voice.
  • Coordination and Dexterity: Manipulative skills to assemble equipment and supplementary tanks.
  • Other: May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases.
