Anesthesia Registered Veterinary Technician

Summary of Job Purpose and Function:

The Anesthesia Veterinary Technician plays a crucial role in the perioperative care of animals in our multispecialty hospital. Working under the guidance of the Nursing Director, Medical Director, and Surgery and Anesthesia Manager, the technician is responsible for providing anesthesia preparation, monitoring, and post-operative care providing anesthesia and sedation for all departments. In addition to delivering top-tier veterinary care, they champion the well-being of our patients, offer exemplary client service, and maintain a safe and efficient hospital environment.

Essential Skills

· Technical skills including but not limited to IV catheter placement, learning and performing advanced skills, venipuncture, and safe restraint.

· Able to maintain focus and work in a fast-paced work environment.

· Adept at problem solving.

· Basic computer skills

· Effective communication and organizational skills

Collaboration and Communication

· Collaborate closely with Veterinarians as well as other Veterinary Technicians, to ensure comprehensive patient care.

· Provide clear and concise communication regarding patient status and any concerns to the veterinary team.

· Record and deliver organized rounds; discuss case and request additional pertinent information as necessary.

· Maintain open and clear communications with members of patient care team regarding treatment plans, client communication, and nursing care concerns.

· Provide client education including, but not limited to home care instructions, medications (indications, adverse reactions), and general wellness updates on hospitalized patients.

Nursing Care/Procedures

· Assist DVM with patient assessment, treatment, and procedures.

· Provide monitoring and nursing care to hospitalized patients.

· Induce and monitor general anesthesia and sedated procedures.

· Perform in-house laboratory testing and prepare samples for outside laboratory testing.

· Documentation of all aspects of treatment.

· Maintain sanitary conditions of hospital; clean and efficient working area.

Equipment and Facility Maintenance

· Clean, maintain, and sterilize equipment used for anesthesia service.

· Ensure the anesthetic areas and associated areas are kept in compliance with hospital policies and standards.

Primary Responsibilities:

· Anesthesia Preparation:

o Prepare and set up anesthesia equipment and supplies for surgical procedures.

o Calculate and administer anesthetic agents according to established protocols.

o Ensure the availability of necessary monitoring equipment and medications.

· Advanced Skills

o Ability to perform arterial catheritzation, epidurals, difficult intubation, and critical case management.

· Patient Assessment and Monitoring:

o Perform pre-anesthetic assessments, including physical examinations and review of patient history.

o Monitor vital signs (e.g., heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, temperature) during anesthesia and surgery.

o Respond promptly to any changes in patient status, and report abnormalities to the anesthesia team.

· Intraoperative Support:

o Assist the department in positioning and preparing the patient for surgery or procedures.

o Administer and adjust anesthesia as needed to maintain an appropriate level of sedation or anesthesia depth.

o Continuously monitor and record patient parameters during surgery or procedures.

· Post-operative Care:

o Assist in the recovery process, ensuring patients wake up smoothly from anesthesia.

o Administer post-operative pain management and supportive care as directed by the veterinary team.

o Monitor patients in the post-anesthetic period for any signs of complications or distress.

· Equipment Maintenance:

o Clean, maintain, and sterilize anesthesia equipment and supplies.

o Perform routine checks to ensure proper functioning of monitoring devices

· Documentation and Record-Keeping:

o Accurately document anesthesia records, including drug dosages, patient parameters, and any incidents during the procedure.

o Maintain organized patient records and ensure compliance with hospital policies.

· Collaboration and Communication:

o Collaborate with other Veterinary Technicians, veterinarians, and support staff to ensure seamless patient care.

o Provide clear and concise communication regarding patient status and any concerns to the veterinary team.

Qualifications

· Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or equivalent certification.

· CVT, RVT, LVT

· Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology program.

· Registered in the State of Ohio.

· Minimum of 1 years of experience in Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician. Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

· Ability to work in a high-pressure environment with attention to detail.

· Preferred Qualifications

o Advanced certification in anesthesia (e.g., VTS in Anesthesia and Analgesia).

o Experience in a multispecialty or referral veterinary hospital.

o Extensive experience with anesthesia

Special Working Conditions

· Fast-paced, high patient load, 24-hour, 7-day/week, 365-day/year veterinary medical facility.

· This position may require special hours, including working weekends and evenings.

· Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 40 pounds unassisted.

· Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm-hand-finger dexterity with the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard and operate equipment.

· Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

· Routinely exposed to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch, and on occasion, exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medication/controlled substances.
