Title: Ancestral Lands - Pueblo of Isleta Natural Resource Technician

Stipend: $450.00/week living stipend and $200.00/week housing stipend 

Term: 6 months (26 weeks)  

Reports to: Pueblo of Isleta Forestry Supervisor- Robert Mariano  

Location: Isleta Pueblo (3929 Hwy 49 Albuquerque, NM 87105)  

Status: Seasonal; 900-hour AmeriCorps Service Term  

Benefits: AmeriCorps Education Award up to $3,447.50 after successful completion of service. Health benefit eligible.  Professional Development Funds available to attend conference. 

 

Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps' Mission: Our vision is to lead our Nations back to ecological and cultural well-being by engaging underrepresented Indigenous youth and young adults in conservation service programs that reconnect participants to the land, their cultural heritage, and their traditions. We work to remove barriers to participation, education, and employment by partnering with local community organizations, agencies, and institutes of higher learning to create paid service and career training opportunities, personal and professional development, and pathways to postsecondary education and employment. Ancestral Lands serves local tribal communities in the regions we operate. 

 

Pueblo of Isleta Natural Resource Department Mission: The Pueblo of Isleta Natural Resources Department aims to provide protection and sustainability of the pueblo's Natural Resources for the benefit of the tribe and its tribal members. 

 

Program Overview: The Pueblo of Isleta (POI) has been partnering with Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps (ALCC) since 2022. This position will be a great opportunity to garnish the need for Natural Resource professionals in the Pueblo. As such, the Pueblo of Isleta in partnership with Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps is seeking to hire a technician within the Pueblo's Natural Resources Department (NRD).   We are not only looking to build capacity within the department but are also looking to actively engage and spark interest in the young adults of Isleta. We envision that this position will foster development in a Natural Resource career with a goal to have the technician join as a crew member on one of the many crews or pursue a career and/or education in one of the many managerial or supervisor positions the Pueblo of Isleta offers.  

The technician will work with and shadow many divisions within the Pueblo of Isleta Natural Resource Department including water resources, forestry, environment, range and irrigation, UXO and bosque restoration divisions. The technician will not only work with field crews but will be able to shadow managers and supervisors while assisting in their daily duties. Technician will be introduced to a wide spectrum of projects within the Natural Resource Department. Including: harvesting firewood, thinning, planting, invasive removal and management, irrigation and range work, surveying, monitoring, and data collection. Overall, the technician will help to improve the ecosystems within the Pueblo of Isleta  

 

Essential functions and responsibilities

Applicant must be reliable, punctual, and self-motivated and able to work independently after initial training and assignment of tasks. 

Applicant must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 30 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly. The applicant must be able to maneuver and operate in a mixture of office work and fieldwork. This includes frequently traversing uneven terrain and the ability to walk, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, reach, push, pull, and/or grasp in variable weather conditions and situations that may require a moderate amount of physical exertion. 

Applicant must be able to receive detailed information through written and/or oral communication and convey important spoken and/or written instructions accurately and effectively with multiple individuals. 

Participate in occasional offsite in person/virtual meetings, trainings, and presentations. 

Safety and Judgment: 

  • Must be able to perceive and effectively communicate environmental and work hazards. 

  • Effectively perceive, understand, and follow direction. 

  • Stay alert and focused while traveling and working in varied weather conditions. 

  • Act with compassion toward co-workers, staff, and partners.  

  • If taking prescription medications, participants must be able to maintain proper dosage by self-medicating without assistance from others.
