Job Summary

Reports to the Technology Director and is responsible for assisting the day-to-day laboratory operations of the analytical testing labs, which includes supervision of employees, maintenance coordination, internal customer interactions, and maintaining the quality standards set forth in the Corporate Technology Analytical Quality Manual.   

Essential Functions

       Participate in the operation of the laboratory in a safe and cost-effective manner

       Supervise day to day activities, including monitoring workload, assigning responsibilities, and scheduling of personnel.

       Scheduling and maintaining calibrations associated with the lab.

       Interact as technical support to customers involving testing issues.

       Ability to troubleshoot equipment, such as minor repairs when required.

       Specialize in test procedures for the responsible Analytical Laboratories, developing new test methods for non-routine procedures

       Handle maintenance work orders.

       Monitor purchasing for the responsible lab area(s).

       Willingness to participate in trade shows; some travel may be required.

       Knowledge of ISO 17025 required.

       Other duties as assigned

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

       Strong math aptitude.

       Strong computer skills

       Good written and oral communication skills

       Ability to interact and lead personnel

       Knowledge of testing standards (e.g. ASTM, SAE, ISO, etc for the plastics and rubber industries

 

Technical Competence:

       Can apply multiple theories and concepts in experimentation and trouble-shooting

       Has in-depth scientific understanding and relevant experience.

       Has technical proficiency to be self-sufficient.

       Understands DOE.

       Understands quality techniques like Paerto charting, fish-bone diagrams, SPC/SQC, etc.

       Understands project management tools used like Gantt and bowling charts.

       Works with speed and accuracy.

       Familiar with EHS standards and codes like TSCA, DSL, FDA, NSF, etcCapable of adapting existing test methods and creating new test methods.

       Technical writing; reports results and conclusions and creates standard operating procedures.

 

Leadership Skills:

       Understands customer requirements and translates them into technical projects.

       Has lead project teams.

       Expands technical network beyond his/her own labs.

       Has developed new tests and approaches.

       Able to explain requirements, test methodology, and results to customers.

       Participates and is solicited as a team member.

 

External Awareness:

       Has developed network of customer and vendor contacts.

       Growing understanding of customer markets and applications.

       Has attended conferences and industry shows and begun to build market knowledge and trends.

       Has visited customers and often presented technical work.

       Has presented a technical paper at an industry conference, or filed a patent application.

 

Communication:      

       Gets buy-in from others for personal projects.

       Comfortable giving oral presentations.

       Provides clear communication on larger projects to wider audiences.

 

Result-oriented        

       Has demonstrated ability to complete more complex experimentation/projects on time and within budget.

       Completed projects have resulted in direct financial gains for BU.

       Clearly understands how project outcome impacts BU top and bottom lines in line with Avient and BU strategies.

       Has generated ideas that contribute to successful innovation.

Business Acumen   

       Can explain Avient's strategies externally from a high level.

       Can write AR's for capital spending, and carries out projects on budget.

       Understands a P/L and a balance sheet.

       Aware of testing and other technology costs and strives to minimize them.

       Aware of options of IP protections

       Provides necessary input for technician performance.

Education and Experience

       Bachelor's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or other related field and five to seven years of related, progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Advanced degree is a plus.  Previous experience with people leadership is required. Requires a strong working knowledge of the polymer industry.
