The Office of Indiana State Chemist (OISC) is seeking an Analytical Chemist. The lab performs regulatory pesticide residue analysis and the Analytical Chemist will be responsible for supporting a team of investigators with providing scientific data on pesticide related investigations.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Perform chemical analyses on a variety of environmental samples in order to determine the presence of trace level pesticides (Includes extraction and analysis using complex instrumentation)
- Analyze samples by Gas Chromatography/Mass Selective Detector (GC/MS), Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry/Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS/MS), and High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
- Follow all applicable SOPs and troubleshoots analyses as needed
- Interpret, analyze and evaluate data to determine if quality control standards are met
- Document analysis reports; submit case data and reports for final review by section supervisor
- Adapt new methodologies for analyses in this laboratory
- Participate in method validation collaborative studies and check sample programs
- Assist in developing new methodologies for analysis of pesticide products and in preparing research manuscripts for publication in referred journals
- Maintain quality control / assurance records, research notes and other records as requested
- Maintain equipment and troubleshoots instrument / process problems as requested
- Train laboratory assistant with duties including but not limited to: cleaning glassware, balance calibration checks and equipment maintenance
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field
- 2 years’ work experience in an analytical laboratory (undergraduate or graduate research experience may count toward work experience)
- Understanding of GLP, general Analytical Chemistry techniques, and chromatography
- Excellent customer service skills and professionalism in dealing with external business partners, students, faculty and staff
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and build working relationships among a diverse workforce at all levels
- Strong organizational and time management skills with emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail
- Motivated individual with ability to efficiently multi task, work under pressure, handle frequent interruptions and meet deadlines
- Ability to identify and determine problems, analyze information and implement solutions
- Capable of taking initiative, assuming responsibility and handling confidential information with discretion
- Ability to work independently and contribute to a team environment
- Must possess a learning orientation to changing technology
- High proficiency in Microsoft Windows, Access, Word, Excel and Outlook (Electronic email/Calendaring)
- Good knowledge in chromatography software packages is desired: Thermo Chromeleon, Thermo Xcalibur, Thermo Tracefinder, Waters Masslynx, Agilent Masshunter and Chemstation

Pay: $50,000.00 - $53,000.00 per year
