Job description

The University of Iowa Pharmaceuticals (UIP) located in the College of Pharmacy is now accepting applications for an Analytical Chemist Intern to participate in our Student Pathways Program. The Student Pathways Program is a paid internship experience designed to provide applied knowledge of qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses of raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products.  This immersive program provides exposure to a combination of wet chemistry techniques and analytical instrumentation in accordance with current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) enforced by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). 

Here, you will have the opportunity to work with the Student Pathways Program manager, Chemists, and the student success center to help you navigate and grow into a successful career as a Chemist. Upon successful completion of the Student Pathways Program, interns will be considered for permanent employment as an Assistant Chemist in the Analytical Services department within UIP.   

This opportunity is open to current University of Iowa students in their junior or senior year pursuing a bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related science field; or to recent University of Iowa graduates who have completed a bachelor's degree in these areas in the past 12 months.

Program Summary:

Our Student Pathways Program is up to two semesters, starting in the summer of 2024, and is designed to provide you with applied skills in laboratory testing, operating laboratory equipment, problem-solving, understanding Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs), and exposure to internal controls and documentation protocols necessary when working in a highly regulated environment. 

Learning Objectives

  • Develop knowledge and an understanding of university policies, and procedures.
  • Understand and be immersed within UI culture.
  • Develop knowledge of federal and state regulations affecting the handling of chemicals, and in-process drug development.
  • Gain professional work experience and develop professional work skills and business acumen through frequent engagement with various laboratory staff, mentors, fellow interns, unit leaders, and campus partners.
  • Develop knowledge of and experience working with various analytical equipment. 

Training Schedule

  • Rotation 1 (2 weeks) - you will learn the foundational aspects of safety and daily laboratory operations.
  • Rotations 2 (2 weeks) - you will learn the fundamentals of pH, balances, care, and use of glassware and pipettes.
  • Rotation 3 (6 weeks) - you will learn proper documentation techniques, data integrity, appearance, and HPLC training.  
  • Rotation 4 (up to 7 weeks) - you will work with a Chemist to begin independent supervised lab projects. The length of rotation may be modified for recent graduates based on availability for working hours during the fall semester. 

The anticipated program start date is June 2024. Required summer availability is between 30-40 hours. For students interested in hands-on application, availability requirements during the fall semester are 10-20 hours per week.  For graduates, the fall semester working hours may be increased based on your availability. 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Compliance:
    • Read, understand, and apply Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs).
    • Learn documentation processes used in laboratory notebooks that follow established guidelines.
  • Analysis and Development:
    • Observe and learn about HPLC analysis.
    • Calculate results obtained in analysis and under supervision may enter data into spreadsheets or databases. 

Qualifications:

Education Requirement:

  • Must be a current University of Iowa student in their Junior or Senior* year working towards a bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related science field; or
  • Be a recent University of Iowa graduate within the past 12 months and hold a bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related science field.

*Due to the structure of this training program, preference is for a student entering their senior year, however, juniors are welcome to apply and will be considered.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Availability for potential full-time role in academic year 2024-2025.

Compensation, Location, and Availability:

  • Compensation:
    •  $16/hour for current students
    • $22/hour for a UI graduate
  • Location: Iowa Bioscience Innovation Facility (IBIF)/College of Pharmacy
  • Work modality: on campus
  • Internship start date: Summer 2024
  • Availability:
    • Summer break - 30-40 hours/week
    • Academic year - 10-20 hours/week for current students, for UI graduates hours may increase based on interest and availability
