WHO WE ARE

Founded in 1933, the IRC is a leading organization providing relief, protection, and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression throughout the U.S. IRC in San Diego has resettled over 31,000 refugees to San Diego County over the past 48 years and provides numerous program services. In San Diego, the IRC opened its doors in 1975 and has grown to serve approximately 7,000 refugee and immigrant individuals from 115 countries of origin each year through 5 different departments.

WHAT IS AMERICORPS? AmeriCorps is a voluntary civil society program supported by the U.S. federal government, foundations, corporations, and other donors by engaging adults in public service work, with the goal of helping others and meeting critical needs in the community. "The program is often seen as the domestic Peace Corps." Members commit to full-time positions of completing 1700 hours during an 11-month contract.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

As the Job Training Coordinator, you will lead the coordination and facilitation of job readiness activities, such as resume preparation, digital literacy, job search, and job application submission, recruit and manage volunteers to provide direct support to clients, and teach work readiness and digital literacy classes to help clients bolster critical job readiness skills.

SCOPE OF WORK

The Job Training Coordinator will support the continued programming of the Job Training and Application Lab (JTAL). JTAL is vital to IRC's Center for Financial Opportunity (CFO) and helps low-income community members prepare for and secure employment opportunities. JTAL assists clients in developing employment plans, creating and improving resumes, conducting practice interviews, determining specific employment opportunities appropriate to the client, and assisting clients in accessing these opportunities by guiding them through the hiring process.

The JTAL Coordinator will conduct work readiness training and focus on digital literacy and public transportation access, which IRC clients have identified as significant barriers to employment through in-school youth and adult workforce programming. JTAL clients have secured employment in industries from retail and hospitality to jewelry and warehouse manufacturing. JTAL provides an essential service to economically disadvantaged community members and many community members whom IRC would not initially reach through other programming. Thus, the Job Training Coordinator will fill an essential function that allows IRC to get more community members seeking to enter the workforce.

OBJECTIVES

  • Under guidance from the Senior Employment Specialist, the AmeriCorps member will:
  • Provide employment/Job Training services to clients. As a result clients will be placed in jobs.
  • Develop professional skills by providing direct service to clients through one-on-one settings, through volunteers, and in-class settings with clients in JTAL.
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of documents and data entry and utilize project coordination skills to implement program activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Job Training Coordinator will support the JTALs in both IRC San Diego offices in City Heights and the City of El Cajon. JTAL is part of IRC's Center for Financial Opportunity (CFO), which aims to help clients prepare to move into the workforce. Responsibilities will include:
  • Leading the coordination and facilitation of job readiness activities, such as resume preparation, digital literacy, job search, and job application submission through recruitment and supervision of JTAL volunteers;
  • Recruiting and managing volunteers to provide job readiness support to clients and direct support to clients;
  • Teaching work readiness and digital literacy classes to help clients bolster critical job readiness skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.
