Job Description Summary:
NCAR's Climate and Global Dynamics (CGD) Laboratory is excited to announce a job opening for a Postdoc Fellow. This is a 2-year position to work on the newly-funded "ALPACA" project (Advancing Long-range Prediction, Attribution, and forecast Calibration of the AMOC and its climate impacts), an international collaboration supported by UK-NERC and US-NSF that will be led by the University of Reading (UK) and NSF NCAR (US). The incumbent will be responsible for conducting original independent as well as collaborative research to advance project goals to quantify, understand, and improve seasonal to decadal Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) predictions. Research results will be communicated regularly to project partners, as well as via oral presentations at national and international scientific meetings and in peer-reviewed journal articles.
This position is within the Climate Change Research (CCR) Section of CGD at NSF NCAR's Mesa Laboratory in Boulder, CO. More information about CGD and CCR can be found online at https://www.cgd.ucar.edu/.

What You Will Do
Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.
  • Conduct fundamental research on the topic of decadal variability and predictability of AMOC and its climate impacts, including analysis of multi-model decadal prediction hindcasts, ocean state reconstructions, and coupled climate model pre-industrial, historical, and future projection simulations.
  • Assist in assessing seasonal predictions of AMOC and developing calibration techniques to improve AMOC predictions.
  • Present results at project meetings and conferences; publish results in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.
  • Contribute to team meetings and discussions, general coordination with national and international project partners, information and data sharing, and reporting to sponsors.

Education and Experience (Required/Desired):
  • Ph.D. in a relevant science; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
REQUIRED
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ocean and atmosphere dynamics.
  • Demonstrated data analysis skills.
  • Experience analyzing coupled climate model output.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with demonstrated success publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a larger team.
  • Skill in planning and managing project goals, objectives, and priorities to produce high-quality and timely deliverables.
  • Demonstrated capacity for creative scientific insight.

DESIRED
  • Experience working with initialized prediction and/or large ensemble datasets.
  • Experience doing AMOC-related research.
  • Advanced proficiency with Python.
