Description
The County of San Mateo Airports Division is currently looking for qualified candidates for the Airports Operation Supervisor position.
The Airport Operations Supervisor is responsible for planning, organizing, supervising, and evaluating the safety, compliance with rules and regulations, operations, and maintenance of the San Carlos and Half Moon Bay Airport facilities, and providing operational and administrative assistance to the Assistant Airport Manager.

Examples Of Duties
Primary responsibilities and duties of the Airport Operations Supervisor may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Schedule, assign, supervise, and inspect the work of Airport Operations and maintenance staff.
  • Monitor the daily operations of the County airports, including emergency services response, maintenance, staffing, airport services, tenant, and business issues.
  • Advises the Assistant Airport Manager regarding operational activities.
  • Ensures compliance with airport rules, and regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Recommends changes and/or new programs, policies or procedures related to Airport Operations, general safety, maintenance, and airport services.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of training programs.
  • Ensures safe operation by coordinating ground operating activities and maintenance with air traffic control staff.
  • Inspects and monitors Airport facilities and grounds to preclude hazardous conditions and ensure compliance with local, federal, and state regulations including but not limited to annual hangar inspections and airspace obstruction analysis.
  • Coordinates Airport operations and maintenance within the County and with outside public and private agencies.
  • Contacts vendors, solicits quotes, and proposals for airport goods and services.
  • Participates in the selection of vendors for goods and services.
  • Assists in the selection of staff; supervises, trains, and evaluates assigned staff.
  • Is available to respond by telephone or in person, as required, during irregular hours.
  • Act in the absence of the Assistant Airport Manager.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

The Ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience in:
  • Airport operations, maintenance, security, and safety including but not limited to CFR Parts 77, 91, 139 and 1542.
  • Air Traffic control procedures.
  • Supervising, training, and evaluating staff.
  • Gathering, reviewing, and analyzing data to make recommendations regarding airport procedures, policies, operations, and maintenance.
  • Communicating concisely and effectively both orally, and in writing.

  • One year of airport supervisory or lead experience.

Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess the following education and certifications:
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in aviation, business administration, or a related field.
  • Airport Certified Employee (ACE) Operations certification from the American Association of Airport Executives.
  • Certified Member (C.M.) certification from the American Association of Airport Executives or ability to obtain the CM certification within 12 months of being hired.
  • Private Pilot Certificate.

Qualifications
Knowledge of:
  • Federal, state, and local rules, regulations, practices, policies, and terminology relating Airport Operations and maintenance.
  • Fire safety techniques and practices.
  • Uniform Fire Code and the National Fire Protection Association Standards.
  • Principles and techniques of supervision.
  • Aircraft operational requirements.
  • Federal Aviation Airport (FAA) obstruction evaluation standards and CFR Part 77 related to obstructions to navigable airspace near and around airports

Skill/Ability to:
  • Provide and train airport staff to provide emergency services, such as responding to on-airport incidents, first aid, CPR and AED.
  • Understand and communicate voluntary airport noise abatement policies and procedures.
  • Safely handle large machinery, such as operating large tractors, climbing 60-foot ladders, and lifting airport related equipment.
  • Plan, direct, coordinate, and evaluate the work of Airport Operations and maintenance staff.
  • Develop and deliver Airport Operations training programs.
  • Meet the Department of Transportation (DOT) drug testing requirements and standards.

Education and Experience:Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying.
A typical way to qualify is:
  • Experience: Five years of experience performing Airport Operations and maintenance duties. One year of supervisory or lead experience is preferred

Licensure/Certification:
  • Possession of a class C California driver license or equivalent.
  • Possession of an Airport Certified Employee (ACE) Operations accreditation through the American Association of Airport Executives.
