Job description

Job Summary:

The Airport Operations Attendant I performs general, routine maintenance activities in the repair, maintenance, set up, and janitorial upkeep of airport buildings, grounds, and equipment to ensure the safe, clean and orderly condition of facilities. Monitors the air operations area per FAA standards and provides condition updates to aircraft operators. Tasks performed may vary depending on assignment.

Scope of Responsibility:

Following procedural guidelines and observing established standards, frequently works under limited supervision. Responsible for the care and safe operation of a variety of equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1 Ensures buildings, grounds and equipment are operational and safe for daily functions.

1.1 Performs walk-through inspections for buildings and grounds assigned; visually inspects areas for cleanliness and identifies problems in need of repair;

1.2 Reports unusual problems or those requiring special attention or resources to the supervisor;

1.3 Keeps sidewalks and entry-ways free of debris;

1.4 Identifies safety concerns and recommends actions to deter vandalism and other damage;

1.5 Locks and unlocks building doors and turns lights on and off as assigned after ensuring that persons are not lingering in secured areas after airline flight operations.

2 Initiates runway inspections at least once per shift or more frequently as weather or wildlife conditions require.

2.1 Checks airfield lighting and signs for proper operation;

2.2 Operates an airport vehicle on the runways and taxiways;

2.3 Performs runway surface friction tests when needed;

2.4 Communicates via cell phone and/or two-way radio with tower and carrier staff about the runway conditions;

2.5 Records inspections and conditions electronically on official FAA forms that are accessible by the tower and carriers;

2.6 Issues Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) to describe current airfield conditions;

2.7 USDA certified, trains annually in identification, proper mitigation and dispersion of wildlife from the airfield by use of pyrotechnics;

3 Cleans and maintains buildings, grounds, and equipment according to established guidelines to ensure a safe and clean environment.

3.1 Sweeps, mops, dusts, vacuums, removes trash;

3.2 Polishes, washes, waxes, strips, and shampoos floors;

3.3 Performs grounds keeping duties such as snow removal, trash pickup, raking leaves, mulching, pruning, trimming, and planting shrubs and trees;

4 Performs safety and security duties.

4.1 Designated first responder for all emergencies including fire, security, and/or mechanical alarms; Performs as trained, frequently without supervision;

4.2 Responds to terminal security, fire system and HVAC system alarms.

4.3 Responsible for crowd control during severe weather conditions and other emergency situations to ensure the safety of the public;

4.4 Deactivates lost or stolen security access badges when required.

4.5 Continually monitors the secure areas of the airport for security risks and unauthorized individuals.

5 Performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance on buildings, grounds and equipment as directed.

5.1 Performs minor maintenance/repair activities on buildings, grounds and equipment such as replacing light bulbs, fill soap and paper dispensers, assembling furniture, replacing parts, and applying paint or varnish, etc.;

5.2 Assists Airport Operations Supervisor and/or designee on mechanical, electrical, heating/cooling, plumbing system and other related system repairs such as replacing ballasts; repairing boilers or chillers; opening clogged drains, replacing plumbing fixtures, replacing parts, assembling furniture, repairing walls, painting, etc.;

5.3 Provides troubleshooting for mechanical problems with jetways or baggage handling equipment and repairs when qualified or calls for technical support as needed.

5.4 Performs set up of tables, chairs, and equipment, etc.;

6 Assists with maintaining supplies and parts for the work unit.

6.1 Notifies supervisor of cleaning supplies and replacement parts required;

6.2 Assists in stocking airport buildings with necessary supplies;

6.3 Loads and unloads various materials into trucks for delivery and/or storage.

7 Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions.

7.1 Communicates with the air traffic control tower;

7.2 Communicates with others in the work unit to provide information relating to work assignments and progress of work or to convey information about conditions or work-related needs;

7.3 Conveys basic information to the public when approached with questions.

8 Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices.

8.1 Knows and follows airport policy as well as sound work and safety practices in order to accomplish the job objectives and avoid injury or loss;

8.2 Wears proper protective equipment when policy requires or conditions indicate a need exists and utilizes proper body mechanics and ergonomics while performing work;

8.3 When potentially unsafe conditions are observed makes efforts to avoid or correct them if they are controllable and draws them to the attention of the responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner.

9 Performs other duties and activities as assigned.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $20.87 - $28.38 per hour
