The Airport Director is responsible for planning, prioritizing, and overseeing all operations and FBO services of the Hickory Regional Airport, in addition to working with the City Manager's Office in planning for the airport's expansion and economic growth. The Airport Director ensures that all airport operations and FBO Services are in accordance with City, State, and Federal policies and regulations.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Oversees all hiring of airport personnel.
  • Ensures the day-to-day workflow of Airport personnel is performed in a productive and professional manner.
  • Ensures that periodic inspections are completed, and in compliance with city, state, and federal agencies.
  • Responsible for and oversees the airport budget along with all financial transactions of the airport.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Plans, directs, coordinates, and manages the day-to-day operation of the Hickory Regional Airport.
  • Responsible for the productivity and professionalism of all airport personnel.
  • Works with the City Manager's Office in managing all airport projects and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates airport policies, procedures, and programs, to ensure the success of both short-term and long-term goals.
  • Researches, updates, implements and tracks all airport finances, leases, and fees.
  • Works with the CMO in researching and developing a capital investment plan to further the long-term goals and objectives of the airport.
  • Identifies opportunities for continuous improvement of FBO services and operations to improve customer service opportunities and the economic growth of the airport.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Deputy City Manager.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of airport operations and maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of FAA and OSHA policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and ability to build and lead a team to accomplish goals and tasks.
  • Professional knowledge of business and financial practices preferably relating to an airport.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize work and time management.

Minimum Education and Experience:
  • A Bachelor's Degree preferably with an emphasis in aviation management, business, or accounting.
  • Five years' experience managing airport operations or FBO services.
  • Knowledge of the requirements for maintaining Part 139 Airport Certification.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to frequently/repeatedly stand; walk; use hands and exert forces needed to handle various types and sizes of tools, equipment, and objects; reach with hands and arms and perform elevated work for periods of time; climb ladders and balance; climb into vehicles and equipment; stoop; kneel; half-kneel; squat; crouch; or crawl; and talk; or hear. The ability to navigate oneself throughout the various areas of the Airport in a safe manner.
  • Must be able to frequently lift, push, pull and/or move more than 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a "Functional Prework Screen" administered by a professional and impartial third-party specialist.

Safety Sensitive:
  • The position has been identified as safety-sensitive. The employee in this position will be part of a random drug testing pool.

Work Environment:
  • The work in this position is typically performed in an office, hangar, and outdoors. The employee may at times be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and inclement weather. Some work requires the use of PPE such, as but not limited to masks, goggles, or gloves.
