Under the direction of an Air Resources Supervisor I, the incumbent is responsible for performing complex tasks related to emissions testing of vehicles and equipment. The incumbent is expected to prepare light- and heavy-duty (HD) vehicles for testing and shall instrument test vehicles with Portable Emission Measurement Systems (PEMS) and/or other measurement equipment. In addition, the incumbent shall operate PEMS units, drive instrumented test vehicles over public roadways, fill the appropriate forms related to testing information, and process emission test data using Excel and Concerto. The incumbent may be called upon to perform and document calibration checks of instruments, collect emissions samples of vehicle exhaust emissions, collect vehicle fluid samples, and operate test vehicles on the road as well as on chassis dynamometer.

The Portable Emissions Measurement Section operates in the California Air Resources Board's (CARB) Riverside headquarters and conducts on-road emissions testing of light- and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. Testing performed provides scientifically and legally defensible engineering data in support of regulation development, emissions inventory characterization, enforcement, and HD vehicle emissions research.

A candidate with experience in PEMS testing is most desirable.

The incumbent's position and reporting office is located at CARB's Riverside headquarters, 4001 Iowa Avenue, Riverside, California 92507. On an infrequent basis, the incumbent may be required to travel to CARB offices in Sacramento for training or for meetings.

Working Conditions

This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the agency and is based on the California Air resource Boards' (CARB) current telework policy. While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required.

The positions at the CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location at their own expense, as indicated on their duty statement.

Additional working condition(s): The work setting is a combination of office and vehicle shop environment. Work tasks frequently include working around large noisy machinery and in the field during vehicle operations.

Pay: $5,146.00 - $6,442.00 per month
