Under general supervision of the Air Resources Supervisor I, the Air Resources Engineer (ARE) will use engineering methods and principles, ensure air district permits accurately and comprehensively reflect engineering standards and applicable requirements of local, State and federal laws and regulations. The Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Enforcement Section (SLCPES) has primary responsibility for monitoring compliance and enforcing current climate change regulations, such as the Refrigeration Management Program, Landfill Methane Regulation, Oil and Gas Regulation, Mandatory Reporting Regulation, sulfur hexafluoride emission reduction programs, and other regulations that may be developed to reduce climate altering pollutants including short-lived climate pollutants, specifically methane, black carbon, and fluorinated gases.
Businesses subject to climate change regulations may be audited or inspected to ensure compliance with California Air Resources Board (CARB)’s regulations. Businesses may be checked to ensure that they have reported as required, have installed the equipment as claimed or required, and that they are attaining the emission reductions claimed or required by the climate change requirements. The ARE will conduct investigations of non-compliance and participate in enforcement actions, including the determination of penalties. They will also participate in the development of new or modified climate change regulations to ensure that the regulated community will be able to comply with the regulations with as little complexity and financial burden as possible. Furthermore, they will attend and participate in public workshops, industry meetings, seminars, and regulatory language development meetings. The responsibilities of SLCPES will evolve over time as current programs mature and new programs are implemented. Travel will be required up to 25% of the time.

Working Conditions
This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework. The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resource Boards' (CARB) current telework policy. While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required.
The positions at CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria outlined in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location at their own expense, as indicated on their duty statement.

- Daily use of a personal computer, office equipment, and/or telephone.
- Additional working conditions: Travel will be required up to 25% of the time for site inspections, meeting and working with regulated entites and local agencies, making presentations and/or providing feedback to other programs and the public on enforcement related topics.

Pay: $6,175.00 - $11,567.00 per month
