Job Description

The Air Quality Scientist/Air Dispersion Modeler will conduct dispersion modeling analyses in support of human health related studies, accidental release responses, and other environmental studies. Work will include preparing meteorological data and other model parameters and processing such data in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other air dispersion models to support analysis of environmental issues. The Air Quality Scientist/Air Dispersion Modeler will run models in support of emergencies involving hazardous chemicals and will travel to emergency sites and support operations in the field by conducting air modeling studies, setting up and operating meteorological stations, and collecting samples of air or other media as necessary to support emergency operations. The Air Quality Scientist/Air Dispersion Modeler will also support other studies related to public health and the environment.

Pay Range: $73,400-$114,650 (commensurate with experience)

ACTIVITIES/TASKS/SCOPE
  • Provide project management support, including client communication, project scheduling and execution of client deliverables on time and with high quality.
  • Provide Air Quality and air dispersion modeling subject matter expertise as a part of multi-disciplinary teams within CTEH and Montrose Environmental Group (MEG).
  • Develop and run U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) air dispersion models in support of human health risk related air monitoring studies or to support regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and run dispersion models in support of CTEH emergency response or planning involving hazardous chemical releases. This may include requiring support on short notice, travel to drill or emergency sites to support client operations in the field. Field tasks may include conducting air modeling, setting up and operating meteorological stations, collecting Air Quality data or other tasks necessary to support emergency operations.
  • Evaluate client project objectives and develop strategies to execute assigned project.
  • Prepare written proposal and reports for a variety of projects, including expert opinions, Air Quality monitoring and air dispersion modeling studies.
  • Compile, critically review and summarize scientific/technical literature and local, state, and federal regulatory documents.
  • Communicate (written, oral, and/or personal contact) with internal and external clients or client representatives, regulatory agencies, as needed and assigned by manager.
  • Perform administrative duties associated with the position; and,
  • Perform such other duties as assigned
SMART PERFORMANCE MEASURES
  • Possession of or ability to complete 40-hour HAZWOPER training in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.120 within 3 months of hire date;
  • Completion of all CTEH designated safety requirements within 3 months of hire date; and
  • Others to be determined.
OTHER DESIRED COMPETENCIES
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a matrix reporting structure.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to respond in a timely manner to all communications from his/her supervisor. Ability to understand and follow written and verbal directions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in the English language.
  • Current, valid, and unrestricted driver's license
  • Ability to obtain a passport.
  • Ability to comply with all job specific OSHA requirements, including the wear of a respirator.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum B.S. in atmospheric sciences, environmental science, or engineering; M.S. preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in Air Quality and dispersion modeling analyses.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in both written and oral formats.
  • Demonstrated experience with EPA air dispersion model AERMOD
CERTIFICATION/OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Experience with accident release air dispersion modeling
  • Experience with EPA's Human Exposure Model (HEM)
  • 3-5 years of experience in Air Quality and dispersion modeling analysis
  • Advanced computer skills in a Windows-based platform are a must.

  • Ability to handle a large volume of work and perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Frequent, unscheduled travel for extended periods of time
  • Ability to drive noncommercial vehicles.
  • Rarely may work shifts of up to 24 hours in duration.
  • Dress out in physically demanding personal protective equipment (PPE) for site entry at HAZWOPER sites as required under 29CFR 1910.120.
  • Wear half-face and full-face air purifying respirator (APR) as well as supplied air respirators in the form of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and hose supplied respirator with medical clearance as required under 29CFR 1910.134.
  • Wear partially or totally encapsulating personal protective equipment.

  • May work outdoors and be exposed to hot and cold environments and extreme weather conditions, including sunlit, rainy, and windy conditions;
  • Encounter environments presenting physical hazards of uneven ground, standing water, ditches, dusty conditions, rapidly moving transportation and remediation equipment, and physical stress associated with the wear of personal protective equipment;
  • Works at altitudes greater than 5000 feet above sea level;
  • May work on land, sea, or air;
  • May work in a setting with potential physical and chemical hazards; and
  • Travels on short notice for extended periods of time.
