Black Canyon Consulting (BCC) is currently searching for a AI Software Engineerto support our work at the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), an institute of the National Institutes of Health. This opportunity is full-time with BCC and it is on-site in Bethesda, MD and/or remote.
Job Description:
The Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications (LHNCBC) in Bethesda, MD, which is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), requires the services of a AI Software Engineer with experience in analyzing large, de-identified, medical record and clinical databases and who will be responsible for developing new data structures, algorithms, and architectures for increased efficiency and effectiveness in managing large datasets. LHNCBC's Applied Clinical Informatics Branch (ACIB) identifies and develops innovative solutions for complex biomedical informatics challenges related to the use of diverse forms of clinical data, such as electronic health records, imaging, and sensor data, that scale across institutional boundaries and applications. Its members translate new research results into operational solutions that can be implemented in healthcare and research environments, and they explore and improve upon emerging solutions in the use of clinical data, including standards for terminology and data communications.
Duties and Responsibilities:
This role will be chiefly responsible for revamping the NLM-Scrubber project's existing codebase from Perl to C++20. The updated version will also feature the integration of various machine learning algorithms, including large language models. A strong command of C++ is essential for this task, along with Python proficiency and experience on both Windows and Linux operating systems. Specific tasks include:

• Collaborating with a small team of developers, primarily via remote work, with the possibility of on-site work.
• Creating new data structures and algorithms to improve efficiency.
• Fine-tuning large language models and integrate them into C++ applications.
• Presenting these reports during daily briefings.
• Performing other duties as assigned.

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science
• Proficiency in using Git, vcpkg, and CMake
• Experience in unit, integration, and regression testing
• Competence in TensorFlow for deep learning applications
• Knowledge in Natural Language Processing (NLP)
• Experience in developing GUI with QT Creator on both Windows and Linux
• Experience in client/server architecture
• Familiarity with Google Benchmarking for C++ code
• Familiarity with Anaconda and with EC2 and S3 in the AWS cloud
• Experience in high-pressure R&D environments
• Experience in developing math-intensive software
• Familiarity with Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery
• Contributions to open-source projects, preferably with published code on GitHub or elsewhere
• Demonstrated expertise in:
  • Algorithm development using advanced data structures
  • Python 3, with at least one year of professional experience
  • C++20, with at least one year of professional experience
  • Fine-tuning large pre-trained language models
• Developing multithreaded applications for Windows and Linux platforms
• Exceptional problem-solving abilities
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
