At Advocate, our mission is to empower Americans to obtain the governmental support they've earned. Americans who are too sick to work and veterans who have been harmed by their service often endure years-long waits for help. These claimants sometimes face bankruptcy or even death while waiting for the financial support and healthcare they need to survive. Advocate aims to reduce long wait times and bureaucratic obstacles of the current government benefits application process by developing a unified intake system for the Social Security Administration and the Department of Veterans Affairs, utilizing AI based cutting-edge technologies. Our founding team comes from SambaTV, BARK, Bridgewater Associates, Department of Housing & Urban Development, and the American Legion. Early partnerships include the official Medicare navigator system of the federal government and several fintech platforms that cater to millions of American workers. Lerer Hippeau and Khosla Ventures led Advocate’s initial round of fundraising, with additional contributions from individual investors and strategic partners. 

The Opportunity
Advocate is seeking a highly skilled and experienced AI Engineer with a strong background in building or working with deep neural networks, particularly Generative and Large Language Models. You will play a pivotal role in the development of innovative AI features that span our product suite and ultimately support millions of citizens seeking government help. Our product will simplify federal program eligibility and streamline enrollment, processing individuals’ eligibility for a wide array of federal, state, and local government programs, and expediting their access to monetary, health, and other benefits in times of need. 

What You Will Do
As an AI Engineer at Advocate, you will work on research and development of AI solutions for our client and case management platforms. This industry-leading product will empower disables Americans by helping the receive their deserved government benefits. You will work closely with the CTO on a dedicated and rapid R&D track to productize AI technology that will truly make a difference in millions of American lives.

You will bring a well-versed understanding of the latest neural network architectures, such as the transformer architecture, an ability to write sophisticated LLM prompts for use in orchestrations of AI agents, and familiarity  with cutting-edge Deep Learning libraries to your day to day efforts. You will work closely with a team of talented developers, designer, and product manager to design, develop, and deploy new AI features that will push the edge of Advocate's technology

• Develop, test, and deploy machine learning models, particularly those using NLP techniques, multivariate regression, economic scoring, and reinforcement learning
• Develop sophisticated prompts for use with Large Language Models
• Stay up-to-date with the latest commercial AI platform offerings, such as OpenAI and Anthropic
• Design and implement AI experiments in Python using Data Science notebooks
• Analyze large unstructured datasets to extract valuable insights and conduct feature engineering
• Leverage machine learning platforms, such as Amazon Machine Learning Services, to enhance our AI capabilities
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate AI solutions into our product offerings
• Continuously improve the performance of existing AI models and explore new techniques to enhance our AI capabilities
• Document and present findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

What You Bring

• A passion for the mission and unwavering commitment to helping Americans with disabilities
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
• Strong background in machine learning, NLP, and Deep Learning
• Solid understanding of neural network architectures, such as the transformer architecture
• Familiarity with the latest commercial AI platform offerings (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic)
• Proficiency in Python and experience using Data Science notebooks for AI experiments
• Experience with large-scale data analysis and feature engineering for unstructured datasets
• Knowledge of machine learning platforms, such as Amazon Machine Learning Services
• Strong educational background in statistics, probability, and linear algebra
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
• Strong written and verbal communication and collaboration skills

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in a relevant field
• Experience with other programming languages, such as JavaScript/TypeScript
• Experience with cloud based serverless microservice architecture and implementation
