Position Summary
Reporting to the Pest Control Advisor (PCA), the Agronomy Intern will work with the PCA on all aspects of pest and disease monitoring, record keeping and interfacing with the farm team. The Agronomy Intern will participate as an active member of the farm team to assist in collecting data used to calculate growing degree days, pest flights, and disease severity using the latest technology to plan spray timing and material use.
The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, diligent, and willing to use critical thinking to deduce root causes to pest and disease infestation in tree crops.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Assist PCA to conduct regular field checks at all California ranches.
  • Partner with and interact with ranch managers and the agronomy team.
  • Conduct insect, weed and disease monitoring and reporting. Publish results to leadership as needed.
  • Perform detailed field reports and manage permanent record keeping.
  • Set pest traps and building pest observation/trap counts, report on findings.
  • Set up and execute research trials as directed by agronomy team.
  • Assist PCA to facilitate new technology implementation and maintenance. Act as a subject matter expert for the ranch teams.
  • Ensure continued knowledge of new Agri-chemicals and pesticide laws and regulations. Share information with ranch teams to ensure compliance.
  • Assist PCA to implement pest control measures though use of economic injury levels and integrated pest management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements
  • High school diploma is required
  • Currently enrolled at an accredited college or university, working toward a bachelor's or master's degree in Agriculture or a related discipline

  • Proficiency in agronomy for tree crops.
  • Good diagnostic and decision-making skills.
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate, both verbal and written is required.
  • Willingness to work as a team member along with ranch managers and the agronomy team.
  • Willingness to embrace new agricultural trends and technology.
  • Self-motivation, willingness to learn and good work ethic is required.
  • Strong Computer skills, including but not limited to Microsoft Office software, email, internet, and spread sheets is required.
  • Solid understanding of irrigation scheduling, ranch operations and agronomy in permanent crops is preferred.

  • Travel between ranches daily is required.

  • Plans to obtain a Pest Control Advisor (PCA) and Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) certification is preferred.
  • Valid driving license is required.
  • Basic knowledge of entomology, pathology and agronomy is preferred

The pay for this role in the state of CA is $17.00/hour and is based on the position responsibilities and geographic location.
