Job description

Per CCR 249.3, this job control may be used to fill subsequent vacancies.
Function #1: Trapping/Survey Activities
• Safely operates and maintains state vehicles. Driving is required; incumbent must have a good record and a valid Class C driver's license.
• Follows established trapping and survey protocols, including proper placement, handling, and servicing of traps. Adheres to trap servicing schedule. May perform insect sweeps and visually inspect for target pest damage on local plant hosts.
• Follows established phytosanitary protocols when entering/leaving trapping sites to prevent spread of pests and diseases of concern.
• Follows maps to trapping locations. When performing field activities, draw maps to show exact geographic locations. May use GPS technology to record geolocation data for trap and sample collection sites.
Function #2: Documentation and Work Completed
• Maintains daily and/or weekly reports of work completed, including number of traps serviced, properties visited and/or surveyed, samples collected, and other information as needed.
• Provides complete data and reports to the Environmental Scientist for tracking/progress of the trapping program.
Function #3: Collection and Submission of Target Pests
• Collects and maintains identity of traps, following established protocols. Traps and suspect samples are handled carefully at all times to prevent cross-contamination of samples and prevent damage that would make identification of a suspect target pest more difficult. Specimens may be removed and placed in appropriate sampling containers as directed, and submitted to the entomology laboratory.
• Examines contents of traps, which may contain hundreds of insects and debris, and screens traps to make preliminary identifications of specimens that resemble target pests.
• Carefully documents address, host type, and location of traps and/or samples collected on property or field by drawing map and/or using GPS unit, and inputs data electronically on a Pest and Damage Record (PDR).

Working Conditions
The duties of this position are primarily conducted outdoors. When assigned to work outdoors, approximately 90% of the time is at nursery and vineyard locations. Overnight and/or extended travel to various locations throughout the state may be required to accomplish work objectives in various environments. State vehicles are used to travel to these worksites. Rental vehicles and/or air travel may also be used. When working outdoors the employee may be exposed to extremes in temperature, adverse weather conditions, dust, fumes, gases, odors, and pollens. 10% indoors work is at a shared workstation, which is an office building and is equipped with standard office equipment.
Incumbent reports to the Senior Environmental Scientist and lead of the Environmental Scientist, but the supervisor or lead are not always on site in the field.
Driving is required. Employee must have a good driving record and a valid Class C California driver's license. If employee is not a California resident but takes a job here or becomes a resident, they must get a California driver's license within 10 days of job appointment.
May require a medical clearance.
Regular or recurring telework may occur as part of the incumbent's ongoing regular schedule in accordance with CDFA's Telework Policy.

Department Information
As part of the Pest Exclusion Branch, the Nursery, Seed, and Cotton Program (NS&C) is responsible for the enforcement of laws and regulations that ensure the quality and orderly marketing of nursery, seed, and cotton plant products. The mission of the program is to prevent the introduction and spread of agricultural pests and diseases in nursery and seed products, thereby protecting California's environment, agricultural systems, and consumers against economic losses. The program coordinates statewide regulatory and inspection activities with county agricultural commissioners. In addition, the program maintains registration and certification services which provide the agricultural industry with clean planting stock.
