Job description

Join our team at KWS Seeds as an Agricultural Field Research Seed Intern who works on one or more projects. During this internship, you will work within either the Commercial or Pre-Commercial Department during the Sugarbeet seed production cycle. You will learn the key elements that are involved in producing quality seed and preparing it to go to market. This internship will begin in May or June and lasts approximately 12 weeks.
Essential job functions:

  • Working within the Pre- Commercial seed department learning the process to ensure seed purity is met; performing test crosses for seed quality, and assist in all crop management activities.
  • Working within the Commercial seed department assist with the supervision of crops to ensure that plants are maintained properly according to company protocol.
  • Learn to identify issues with the seed production process and provide proper direction when issues arise.
  • Assist in grower communication and coordination.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports regarding seed production.
  • Coordinate and supervise labor crews as needed.
  • Conduct germination testing and another proprietary testing
  • Ensure the Company Handbook, Rules, Guidelines and Procedures, and safety policies are followed and personal protective equipment is used correctly.
  • Occasionally travel and/or drive on behalf of the business.
  • Some weekends and variable work schedules.
  • Meet attendance requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required qualifications:
  • Currently pursuing an Associate's degree in Agricultural, Agronomy, Plant Science, Biology, or a related field.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Able to work weekends, varying hours including all shifts.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently solve problems and make decisions.
  • Detailed oriented.
  • Proficiency with MS Office programs

Preferred qualifications:
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Agricultural, Agronomy, Plant Science, Biology, or a related field.
  • Strong multitasking abilities aptitude is highly desirable.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Experience operating farm equipment, such as tractors and similar machinery.

Working Environment:
Ability to work in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings including but not limited to hot, cold, dusty, damp, factory conditions, and office areas. Working more than a 40 hour work week, and some weekends may be needed per the needs of the business.

The employee must frequently lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and move objects up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
