After School Math Tutor

JOB SUMMARY: Epworth Children's Home is currently seeking individuals to provide individual and small group tutoring sessions in math to its middle and high school aged residents. Tutors will engage students in academic activities and utilize effective instructional strategies to maximize the students' potential for academic success while supporting their public-school education. Candidates must be able to relate to students while maintaining boundaries and confidentiality. This is a position coordinated through Richland School District One and Epworth. Tutors work 5-10 hours per week (Monday-Thursday 3:30-6:00) during the school year (late August - May).

QUALIFICATIONS: A current teaching certification is not required but a degree and/or experience teaching/tutoring is necessary. Pay scale is dependent on certification status and set by Richland School District One.

REQUIRED SKILLS: Significant life experience in working with children and adolescents (i.e. teacher, group residential counselor, church/youth experience, camp counselor, etc.) Ability to provide instruction through explanation, demonstration and/or supervised practice is imperative. An understanding of and ability to teach mathematics concepts through the Algebra 2 level. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students and staff. Ability to self-monitor and manage multiple tasks while working individually or with members of a small group. Passion for helping students learn and have the knowledge and skills to help students find new ways to look at difficult skills and concepts they do not understand. Ability to evaluate and document student progress, keep appropriate records, and write weekly lesson plans. Ability to supervise students and maintain order in various classroom and instructional activities and situations.

Demonstrated ability to use sound discretion and good judgment in developing and implementing decisions. Has a belief system and engages in faith practices that are compatible with those of the United Methodist Church. Must be able to pass standard background checks, including drug screen, employment physical, SLED, DSS Central Registry, and Sex Offenders Registry.
