JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Affirmative Action Office (AAO) supports Penn State's strategic goals of advancing a diverse and inclusive community by providing expert advice and leadership to colleges and departments, faculty, and staff ensuring a workplace free from discrimination and harassment. The office's primary role is to ensure the University's compliance with federal Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action regulations.

We are seeking candidates for the position of AAO Investigator. Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President for Affirmative Action, the Investigator's primary responsibilities include:
  • Investigating reports of alleged discrimination and harassment involving legally protected categories
  • Providing prompt and effective responses to complaints
  • Preparing investigative reports and communicating findings to involved parties and relevant University administrators
  • Assisting with providing resources and support services for complainants


The Investigator will assist in maintaining a database of reports of discrimination and harassment, and develop reports, assess trends, and identify areas of concern across the University. In addition, the Investigator will assist with reviewing and revising policies and procedures related to discrimination and harassment to ensure compliance with applicable law and best practices. This position requires regular coordination with, and some travel to, all Penn State campuses. There is potential for a hybrid in-person/remote work schedule.

Candidates must have advanced knowledge and comprehension of Title VII, Title IX, ADA, VEVRAA, VAWA, Clery, and all other related federal policies, as well as a demonstrated ability to effectively investigate and apply conflict resolution strategies specifically to discrimination and harassment complaints within employment settings. Additionally, candidates should have a full understanding of concepts and best practices related to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

Education and experience:

This position will be filled at a level 3 or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's Degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher-level jobs.

A Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field is preferred.

Candidates must demonstrate excellent judgment, organizational skills, and effective investigative techniques, along with a high degree of personal/professional ethics and an ability to maintain professional boundaries. Must also be able to establish rapport and work cooperatively with administrators, faculty, staff, students, and outside agencies, within a multi-campus, highly interdisciplinary environment.
