Job description

Provides advanced professional nursing care which includes the delivery of primary health care, diagnoses and treatment of common medical conditions, health education and counseling; plans, coordinates, administers, reviews and evaluates nursing and related health services provided in Juvenile Services programs; and performs related work as required.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in nursing and sufficient advanced, specialized nursing training to qualify for the State of Nevada certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, with a subspecialty of pediatrics or family medicine.

Ideal candidate:

  • Must have the ability to work independently
  • Experience working with kids or at-risk populations

License or Certificate

  • A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Nevada is required at the time of appointment.
  • Licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse with the State of Nevada Board of Nursing is required within three months of date of appointment.
  • Licensure with the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy to prescribe is required within three months of date of appointment.

After the interview, top candidates must pass a background investigation which includes:

  • Submit a set of fingerprints
  • Complete and submit a personal history statement.
  • Must submit to a TB test at own expense upon offer of employment.

Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.

This is not a classified position and is not covered by a collective bargaining unit.
Intermittent hourly employees are exempt employees. "Intermittent hourly employee" means a person who is not employed on a fixed schedule and works on an "on-call" basis. Please be advised that upon appointment an Intermittent Hourly employee cannot work a regularly scheduled work schedule and must work less than 1040 hours in any fiscal year. Intermittent Hourly employees are "at will" employees and serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.
Retired PERS (Public Employees' Retirement System of Nevada) employees are responsible for contacting PERS to make sure that they do not go over the assigned PERS earnings limit for a fiscal year in order to retain retirement benefits. PERS phone number is 775-687-4200 to check for yearly updates.
Washoe County hires all new employees at the minimum rate of the salary range and eligible employees may receive an annual merit increase of 5% until they reach the maximum salary for the classification. Upon promotion, current Washoe County employees are placed at the minimum rate of the salary range for the higher classification of the new position OR a promotional calculation, whichever is greater.

Juvenile Services falls under the direction of the District Court, and as such, Juvenile Services is not a part of Washoe County's merit personnel system, and Juvenile Services employees are not members of a bargaining unit.
