Job description

Overview:
The OB/Newborn Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) provides support to the Birthcare Center leadership team as well as the Director of CWCH within the division. Focus of the APN will be specifically around OB Maternal and Newborn care in the Birthcare Center. Flexibility will be important, as they support work outside of their division, to meet priorities across the organization. Priorities and focus areas for the APN will come from unit/division leaders, Patient Care Cabinet, and other leaders within the organization. The APN will maintain clinical competence by providing direct patient care as acuity, staffing and volumes dictate. The APN will assist, coordinate, and influence nursing practice excellence in the patient care area. The APN acts as a resource person for patient care associates and works cooperatively within the hospital community to coordinate nursing policy and education of staff, maintain standards of care, and performance improvement consistent with the established strategic plan, goals, and objectives for Patient Care Services.

Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Demonstrates clinical leadership as a role model for staff nurses.
  • Builds partnerships that support and promote care coordination and care management strategies.
  • Consults nursing management regarding issues or barriers in delivery of care, staff achievement of competency, system concerns, provider concerns or specific patient care problems.
  • Participates in divisional and hospital shared governance infrastructure.
  • Coordinate and lead hospital-wide patient initiatives as needed.


Clinical Excellence

  • Oversight, implementation and evaluation of performance improvement initiatives and quality metrics.
  • Partners with provider’s and patient care team members to achieve progress towards outcomes.
  • Maintains current knowledge of trends and advances in nursing practice.
  • Uses advanced concepts in nursing processes in the clinical setting.
  • Incorporates the St. Luke’s Hospital’s Comfort/C.A.R.E. Professional Practice Model into their daily nursing practice.

Education

  • Serves as a resource to the nursing staff, as well as to other health care associates based on professional standards of care.
  • Assists with formulation of evidence based nursing policy and procedure.
  • Provides support and resources to the division for on-boarding of new associates.
  • Supports competency development and implementation within the division for nursing and patient care tech staff.
  • Serves as a resource for other members of the healthcare team, including providers, who are involved with performance improvement tools.

Research

  • Identifies pertinent research questions arising from clinical practice.
  • Facilitates implementation of evidence-based practice or nursing research studies, and translates findings into best nursing practice.
  • Assists with formulation of evidence-based nursing policy and procedure.
  • Reports research findings to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Mentors staff on research process and implementation principles.


Basic UPH Performance Criteria

  • Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
  • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
  • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:


  • Completion of an accredited nursing program
  • Master’s degree in nursing or healthcare-related field


Experience:


  • Three years of clinical experience


  • Three years of leadership experience with evidence of successful change management


License(s)/Certification(s):


  • Current RN licensure in the State of Iowa or compact state
  • Current BLS certification
  • Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons

  • Specialty certification preferred.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:


  • Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

  • Microsoft Office – basic computer skills.
  • Customer/patient focused.
  • Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.
