SUMMARY
The Softball Umpire, under the direct supervision of the Softball Supervisor, is responsible for the supervision and enforcement of rules of their assigned games.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of one-year experience as umpiring, refereeing or coaching.
- Possess a working knowledge of recreational softball programming
- High school graduate and a minimum of 21 years old.
- Enforce all facility and league rules
- Handle on-field rule disputes
- Communication of personnel matters to Softball Supervisor as necessary.
- Ability to demonstrate leadership qualities to perform required work.
- Capacity to be self-motivated and achieve goals with minimal supervision or direction
- Ability to maintain self control and composure in difficult situations
- Capacity to troubleshoot, problem solve and make sound judgments with respect to confidentiality.
- Promote Park District programs to patrons, members, guest and staff.
- Ability to cooperate with and interpret Park District Philosophies in relation to governmental, public and private groups and agencies and the general public.
- Perform the job safely and in compliance with District policies, procedures, work and safety rules, and the employee policy manual.
MARGINAL DUTIES
- Assist staff and volunteers in the performance of their duties
- Umpire 1-2 nights per week as needed
- Communication of personnel matters to Softball Supervisor as necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned
HOURS AND COMPENSATION
- The Softball Umpire will have varying hours depending on league enrollment. Hours will be set in cooperation with the Softball Supervisor and Lippold Park/Athletic Supervisor.
- Compensation will be established based on seasonal evaluations and recommendation of the Lippold Park/Athletic Supervisor with concurrence of the Superintendent of Recreation and Director.
PHYSICAL CONSIDERATIONS
- Must be able to lift, support, and/or restrain program participant.
- Must be able to perform manual labor with varying degree of physical exertion.
- May frequently be required to walk, sit, talk and hear.
- May frequently be required to use hands and/or fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
- May occasionally be required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl
- May occasionally be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Lift over 50 pounds with assistance.
- May be in awkward or difficult positions resulting in physical fatigue
- May have specific vision abilities required for this job: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Must be able to work:

- in and out of controlled temperatures occasionally throughout the day.
- required to work occasionally in all elements of weather.
- occasionally exposed to elevated noise levels produced from participants, large crowds, public venues, sound equipment, maintenance equipment and/or power tools.
- occasionally at job sites where dust, pollens, molds, etc may be present
- occasionally work with household products/chemicals
