Back to all Jobs Adult Services Librarian (Open Positions: 1) Closes On: December 30, 2023 at 11:59 PM CST Department: Library Job Status: Not Specified Rate of Pay: $14.00/hr - Position Type: Full Time Status: Accepting Applications Apply Now Job Summary This is a Librarian position providing direct service work, coordination, and managing the adult, (young adult and adult), collection, programming, and activities. This staff member also provides general library services for adult library customers, including special services such as the Adult Summer Reading Program, adult education programs and outreach that enhance the lives of and promote reading to adult customers. Performs a variety of routine clerical and manual work in circulating and processing library materials and providing services to library patrons.

Experience Required: None. Minimum Education Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in Library Science or related field from an accredited college or university. Library experience is preferred.

Any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Direct Supervisor: Works under the supervision of the Library Director. Supervisory Responsibility: Generally, none.

May supervises library employees when the Library Director is not on duty. May supervise library aids, volunteers, and part-time or temporary staff, as assigned. Primary Work Location: City Library.

The noise level in the work environment is generally quiet but may be noisy at certain times or during certain programs. Job Responsibilities An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties: A. Schedule, plan, conduct, and publicize library activities and programs for adults.

B. Develop and maintain all aspects of the adult collection, including selecting books, periodicals, and audio-visual materials. C.

Provides reference and reader's advisory services for adults and staff in a courteous manner. Provide information and direction in person and by telephone to assists customers in selecting and finding materials D. Maintain a regular desk schedule in the main office/circulation area.

E. Prepare promotional materials and attend functions to promote library functions as requested. F.

Provide guided library tours and orientations. G. Prepare professional quality documents and reports for planning and statistical purposes in a timely manner.

Also prepares weekly, monthly, and annual reports for the library director. H. Organize attractive book displays and maintain the main library area as an inviting place that attracts adult users and encourages reading.

I. Assist the director in preparing the annual budget, particularly as it relates to Adult Services and needs. J.

Submit to the library director purchase order requisitions for young adult and adult department material. K. Assist in weeding of the material in the main library area.

L. Assist in near-term and long-term planning for the young adult and adult department. M.

Assist patrons in locating and obtaining materials. N. Read shelves to keep inventory in order.

O. Register new patrons and record information in database. P.

Demonstrate the on-line catalog and databases used in library to patrons. Q. Check in and out library materials such as books, videos, and magazines.

R. Inspect returned books for damage. S.

Repair damage books as needed. T. Process, catalog, and cover new material.

U. Sort and shelf material. V.

Understand library policies and procedures. W. Answer telephone and reference questions or refer to another member of staff.

X. Use office equipment such as copier, fax, laminator, printers, and calculators. Y.

Operate computers with Windows applications including Publisher and Excel. Z. Processes overdue charges and fines.

AA. Assist in maintaining library facilities by vacuuming and dusting, picking up toys, emptying waste containers, emptying book drop, straightening books, chairs, shelves, papers, and magazines. BB.

Attend staff meetings. CC. Accept other duties given by the director.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge - Knowledge of library circulation or processing techniques Working knowledge of library classification systems Working knowledge of basic office procedures. Skills - Basic computer operating skills. Basic skill in operating Library computer system Efficient operation of copier, calculator, fax machine and telephone system.

Abilities - Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Be a good steward and make decisions in an environment of limited resources. Must be able to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships and attitudes with patrons, Director, co-workers, and the public.

Bending, stretching, and constantly up and down are necessary movements for this job. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Qualifications Must be able to read and write the English language.

Must be able to verbally communicate to exchange information. Certifications: Must complete the Institute in Public Librarianship Certification Program within two years of employment as Adult Services Librarian.
