Position Title: Peer Support Specialist
Location: Based in Park City, UT*.
*Attendance at the Salt Lake office is required every Thursday and Friday.
Term: Part time of Full-Time Position available, benefited for Full-Time
Rate of Pay Range: $22-24/ hr. DOE.
Education: High school diploma or GED, CPSS certification preferred, but not required.
Schedule: Monday – Friday (some weekends required, flexible)
Hours: Varies 10:00 AM –7:00 PM, depending on organizational needs
Latino Behavioral Health Services (LBHS) is a non-profit organization focused on providing behavioral health services to the Latinx community of Utah. This includes therapy, peer mentoring, support groups, and educational classes. All the services are provided in English and Spanish, with a focus on being culturally and linguistically responsive. LBHS’s team members are emotionally aware individuals who work towards the empowerment of the Latinx community. They are immigrants and community members, as well as people with a history of mental illness and/or substance abuse.
Summary of Position
The Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) will provide direct peer-to-Peer Support services to youth and adults who have mental health, substance abuse, or co-occurring disorders. As an advocate for clients, the Certified Peer Support Specialist will be responsible for providing essential expertise and consultation to the entire multidisciplinary treatment team to promote a culture in which each individual's treatment needs and preferences are recognized, understood, respected and integrated into treatment, rehabilitation, and community self-help activities. The Certified Peer Support Specialist will draw from their own journey of recovery to inspire hope and provide support to others who are facing similar situations.
Essential Functions
- Appropriately shares lived experiences with clients in support of overall mental health treatment goals.
- Actively engages with other treatment team members to support clients and accomplish treatment objectives.
- Establishes, maintains, and co-facilitates a Peer Support relationship with youth and adults by maintaining an active case load of 15-25 depending on other responsibilities which include; Facilitating groups/classes, School and community outreach
- Works with clients to meet basic needs by scheduling appointments consistently, providing community resources, and maintaining consistent client contact.
- Charts and documents behaviors, activities and sessions in a timely manner and according to company policies.
- Assists clients in developing problem-solving skills to respond to challenging experiences in their recovery and developing empowerment skills through self-advocacy.
- Models effective coping and self-help strategies and techniques to individuals or groups of clients to overcome personal fears, anxieties, urges, and triggers.
- Assists/supports clients in daily decision making, resolution of minor problems, and crisis intervention as necessary.
- Assists clients in identifying their personal goals and objectives for recovery and sobriety.
- Assists clients in creating their personal recovery plans.
- Meets with clients to provide advice and support in accordance with treatment plans.
- Assists/coordinates Peer Support groups on a regular basis
- Assists clients in obtaining and utilizing clinic based and community-based services that support individual recovery needs
- Assists clients by identifying community resources and encouraging participation, to engage in healthy social activities, employment opportunities or provide other assistance as needed
- Attend at least two tabling events a month, these tabling events may take place on the weekend
Minimum Qualification and Skills
- Latino Behavioral Health Services is seeking a person with lived experience, who can connect to the Latinx community.
- Employee must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check.
- Latino Behavioral Health Services is seeking a self-identified individual who is in recovery from behavioral health and/or substance use disorders; or is a person who has or has had an ongoing and personal relationship with an individual with a behavioral health disorder or substance use disorder.
- Must have or will commit to complete a Peer Support Training through the Utah Division of Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health (DSAMH)
- Bilingual skills required (Spanish and English);
- Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable and insured mode of transportation, and the flexibility to work some weekends.
