Morning Classes: Monday - Thursday 9:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
Evening Classes: Tuesday & Thursday 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Salary/Hourly Rate: Per HEA Contract
SUMMARY:
Creates a classroom environment for adults which fosters learning and personal growth; motivates pupils to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide an excellent education. Positions are open for both morning and evening classes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
This class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive. Incumbent(s) may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skills.
  • Teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to adults using listening, pronunciation/speaking, reading, writing and grammar as a part of student-based learning
  • Anti-racism and equity at the focus of your work
  • Align instruction to MN ABE Content Standards (CCRS, ACES/TIF, Northstar Digital Literacy)
  • Analyze student needs and assess progress with CASAS/TABE assessments
  • Use appropriate techniques for individual learning styles
  • Provide for individual as well as group learning by use of computer-assisted instruction or other methods preferred by the adult learner
  • Coordinate volunteer-student assignments by determining selection of materials, supervising student's progress, and assessing needs and performance
  • Responsible for record keeping for class and for accurately recording attendance, student progress, reasons for leaving, etc.
  • Participate staff meetings as assigned by coordinator
  • Manage classroom and learning labs to facilitate learning and retention of students
  • Maintain levels of training criteria established by State Department of Education

QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in education, or a closely related field.
  • Experience teaching adult English language learners
Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
  • Driver's license.
  • MN Teaching License is required. *NOTE: Tiered licensure requirements in MN do allow for some options for unlicensed candidates to receive short term licenses with District sponsorship so unlicensed candidates with relevant experience and education are also encouraged to apply.
  • Bacehlor's degree or Master's degree in English as a second language, applied linguistics, or bilingual education, or a related degree.
  • MA in Adult ESL, preferred.
Required Knowledge and Skills
Required Knowledge:
  • District policies and procedures.
  • Curriculum requirements and learning objectives.
  • Adult learning theories and development.
  • State and Federal laws and regulatory issues governing public education, including rules and regulations of the Minnesota Department of Education.
  • Legal, ethical and professional rules of conduct for public education teachers.
  • Principles and techniques of making effective oral presentations.
  • Computer applications related to the work.
  • Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.

  • Developing and maintaining a public education learning environment in which positive, appropriate behavior is encouraged, and discipline problems are minimized.
  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
  • Operating a personal computer using standard and specialized software.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

Occasional travel required to locations throughout the District.
