General Job Summary

Education: RN/LPN graduate from an accredited school of Nursing required. Must

possess and be responsible for maintaining a current license with the

Iowa Board of Nursing.

Requirements: It is the responsibility of the Admissions Nurse/ADON to meet all continuing

educations requirements, whether internal or external, that are mandated

by the Iowa Board of Nursing and/or the employer. Failure to maintain

current license will result in termination. Must attend in-services offered

in the facility.

Work

Experience: CPR certification required. Geriatric experience or certification is

preferred. Experience and familiarity with computer functions including

MDS software, Internet connection, and downloading functions are

Required. Point Click Care experience preferred.

General Job Summary

The Admissions Nurse/ADON assists in the supervision and administration of quality nursing care for the facility specifically related to admissions and discharges of residents. The Admissions Nurse/ADON must possess a comprehensive knowledge of general nursing, theory and practice, including basic knowledge related to nursing such as drugs, biological, physical, social, and medical sciences, and their application for a better understanding of resident-care problems. A good memory and excellent communication skills are required. The Admissions Nurse/ADON will assist in maintaining a physical, social, and psychological environment which will be conducive to the best interest and welfare of the residents.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Admissions Nurse/ADON is required to perform the following duties and responsibilities which constitute essential functions for the position:

  • Ability to evaluate the resident needs, conditions, and care, including rehabilitative and restorative activities and instructions in self-help, notifying medical doctor and family regarding change in condition of resident. ADON will assist with care plans for each resident with the ability to input information into the computer.
  • Ability to communicate with family members regarding the condition and progress of the resident, including in-person discussion and answering of telephone inquiries.
  • Assist the physicians in rounds, reviewing physicians’ orders, ordering medications, maintenance of residents’ charts, transcriptions of physicians’ orders.
  • Maintaining necessary supplies, equipment, linens, emergency drugs, and other materials to meet the facility needs. The ADON is also responsible for making sure the equipment is in good working condition.
  • Maintain unit records, including charting duties and maintenance of narcotic records.
  • Assist charge nurses in arranging the schedules, appointments, and transportation necessary for residents in connection with diagnostic, therapeutic, dental, or medical services.
  • Responsible for the admission, discharge, or transfer of residents.
  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and orientating of Nursing staff. Also responsible for scheduling nursing staff with the authority to make changes and revise duties in order to meet resident needs. Responsible to ensure that nursing staff complete assigned duties. Responsible for assisting in finding replacement for nursing staff shift.
  • Responsible for monitoring of overtime, disciplining and recommendation of termination in nursing staff. Responsible for nursing staff evaluations and to provide counseling to nursing staff on performance improvements.
  • Assist with orientation and training programs for staff.
  • Responsible for implementing policies and procedures.
  • Ability to make daily rounds to evaluate emotional and physical needs of residents.
  • Ability to perform all rules and policies of the facility.
  • Unsure all call lights are answered promptly. ( Promptly being no longer than 15 minutes)
  • Provide privacy to residents at all times.
  • Follow up on all PRN’s administered.
  • Know all policies and procedures.
  • Practice infection control techniques; good hand washing, gloves, and disposal of infectious waste and needles.
  • When necessary assist in notifying funeral homes when residents expire.
  • Assist with transfers, repositioning and ambulating if needed.
  • Check restraints and positioning.
  • Report census changes.
  • Report to housekeeping about cleaning beds and rooms when resident is hospitalized or expires.
  • Notify kitchen of diet changes, residents who wish to eat in room, residents out of the facility for meals and residents who are NPO.
  • Notify family or responsible party of resident needs.
  • Making staff responsible for making sure call lights are within reach and side rails are up as need.
  • Check for expiration dates on all medications.
  • Assist charge nurse with weekly summary of treatments and measure all open areas.
  • Consultation with dietician, social worker, activity director, MDS coordinator, DON, and administrator.
  • Follow- up with ICP team recommendations.
  • Call therapist with new orders. Follow- up with therapist recommendations.
  • Call pharmacies with changes in medication orders when charge nurse is busy.
  • Assist charge nurse as necessary
  • Knowledge of use of blood sugar monitor devices
  • Report any alleged adult abuse to administrator.
  • Answer phone and take messages when needed.
  • Report necessary information to DON and/or administrator.
  • Fill out transfer sheets, make copies of med sheets, Ins cards, living will and POA for health care if charge nurse is busy.
  • Dispense medications per physician orders, routine and PRN’s. This includes oral, rectal, subcutaneous injections, IM injections, eye drops and eardrops and inhalers when charge nurse is busy.
  • Collect specimens; sputum, urine, stool, and cultures of various areas when charge nurse is busy.
  • Do all treatments as ordered by physician when charge nurse is busy.
  • Notify physician regarding change in resident’s condition; incidents; admission, discharge and death. Assist charge nurse when necessary.
  • Responsible for administering emergency first aid and CPR. Do not do CPR if resident has signed DNR.
  • Be on call. Responsible for RN and LPN call off’s if no one is available to work.
  • Over all responsible for residents and nursing staff in the facility.
  • Responsible for overall management of Nursing department.
  • Prepare pre admission screenings.
  • Assist with Admissions as necessary.
  • Respect Residents Rights.
  • Comply with all laws governing Protected Health Information.
  • Comply with Adult Abuse Policy.
  • Access to Protected Health Information: Entire Medical Records.
  • This is NOT all inclusive list of duties and responsibilities for the ADON.
  • Other duties as assigned by Director of Nursing.

Physical Activity Requirements:

Lift Requirements. The ADON may be called upon to lift equipment or supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally may be required to assist with lifting residents. Assistive equipment is available for resident transfers.

Carrying Requirements. The ADON will frequently be required to carry objects including charts and equipment up to 15 pounds. May be occasionally called upon to carry equipment up to 30 pounds

Socialization Requirements. The DON is required to work with all other persons in the facility and the ability to get along with others and to socialize with others is essential. In addition, the DON is responsible for meeting and dealing with residents and their families requiring excellent communication socialization skills.

Other Physical Requirements. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and stand; use hands to handle or feel; to talk or listen. May be occasionally called upon to perform twisting, bending, squatting, kneeling or crouching when assisting with a resident care need. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms.

Special Requirements:

Must be able to work overtime. Must be available on an “on-call” basis.

Pay: $35.00 - $40.00 per hour
