Description
Under general supervision of the Director of Nursing is responsible for monitoring and coordinating administrative and nursing services on an assigned shift; perform special functions as assigned, e.g. nurse recruiter.
Submission of a valid California Registered Nurse License is required.

The County of Santa Clara owns and operates a Hospitals and Clinics Delivery System that includes Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, O'Connor Hospital, St. Louise Regional Hospital and the Custody Health Services in the County Jail.
Santa Clara Valley Medical Center - 731 bed tertiary level acute care hospital provides the highest level of adult and pediatric emergency medical and trauma services, a regional high risk Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, an ACS-verified Burn Trauma Center, a Primary Stroke Center, a CARF-accredited Rehabilitation Center, emergency and acute inpatient psychiatric services, as well as a range of other specialized services - in some cases the only such treatment in the region.
O'Connor Hospital -358 bed acute care facility offering a full range of inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical and specialty programs to more than 1 million residents of San Jose. O'Connor Hospital was founded in 1889 as one of the first hospitals in Santa Clara County.
St. Louise Regional Hospital - 93 bed acute care facility, affectionately known as South County's community hospital, is a Designated Primary Stroke Center, and is the only acute care hospital in the area. Located in Gilroy, St. Louise is one of the largest employers in the community.

Typical Tasks
Assessment
  • Analyzes utilization of staff and distribution of work load with respect to organization, fiscal management and social, political, professional and specialization trends in nursing practice.
  • Assesses needs of clinical nursing staff in relation to human and environmental resources required for implementation of patient care programs for the assigned shift.
  • Assesses staffing needs in collaboration with Administrative Nurse III and IV for an assigned shift.
Planning
  • Participates on nursing and hospital committees.
  • Collaborates with Administrative Nurse III and IV to influence institutional goal setting by identifying and communicating problems, pressures and trends.
  • Collaborates with Administrative Nurse III and IV to prepare annual budget for nursing.
  • Collaborates with Administrative Nurse III and IV to determine staff development needs of nursing.
  • Collaborates with Administrative Nurse III and IV to determine staff development needs of nursing personnel on assigned shift.
Implementation
  • Utilizes resources available to assign and redistribute staff to respond to patient needs.
  • Identifies and assists in resolution of patient or visitor problems and communicates to administrative and clinical personnel when appropriate.
  • Participates in resolving unusual or complex interdepartmental problems as they relate to the delivery of quality nursing care.
  • Participates in development and teaching of leadership and management skills.
  • Promotes compliance with Federal, State and local regulatory standards and JCAHO.
  • Establishes and maintains effective channels of communication with clinical nursing staff, administrative nursing personnel, paraprofessionals and other departments in the broader institution.
  • Collaborates with Administrative Nurse III and IV to identify need for corrective action of an employee and initiates action when necessary.
  • Facilitates and coordinates delivery of patient care with other professional staff and support services.
  • Uses systematic methods to resolve patient care and nursing problems.
  • Initiates planned change, evaluates outcomes and implements corrective action through conscious, deliberate and collaborative efforts.
  • Interprets hospital policies and regulations to nursing staff members, other hospital disciplines, visitors and patients and ensures conformity to same.
Evaluation
  • Participates in employee evaluation process with Administrative Nurse III and IV.
  • Monitors implementation of nursing and patient care standards to ensure quality control.
  • Reviews patterns of care and unusual occurrences to identify implications for educational change and practice or other organizational factors.
  • Participates in the evaluation of the delivery of support services necessary to facilitate quality nursing care.
  • Annually evaluates own professional performance and job satisfaction based on attainment of goals.

Employment Standards
Possession of a license as a Registered Nurse issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
Possession of a diploma or an associate degree in nursing and three years of clinical experience, two of which must have included supervisory or administrative responsibilities; or a baccalaureate degree in nursing and two years of clinical experience, one of which must have included supervisory or administrative responsibilities; a master's degree in nursing or a management discipline e.g. business administration or hospital administration and one year of clinical experience, six months of which must have included supervisory or administrative responsibilities; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possession of a master's degree in nursing or a management discipline is preferred.
The knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of the duties of this position.
