Duties and Responsibilities
Overview:Bowie State University, a distinguished Historically Black College/University (HBCU), is seeking highly qualified Adjunct Professors to join Bowie's Prison Education Program (BPEP). This innovative program is a pioneering initiative that offers incarcerated individuals at the Jessup Correctional Institution in Jessup, Maryland, the opportunity to pursue higher education and earn a degree while serving their sentences. Specifically, BPEP offers a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology to students in the program; as such, they must also fulfill all general education requirements (e.g. math, science, history, government, philosophy, and more). Therefore, we are looking for Adjunct Professors across various disciplines to facilitate a broad range of courses.
Duties & Responsibilities: As an Adjunct Professor in the Bowie State University Prison Education Program, you will have the unique opportunity to make a significant impact on the lives of incarcerated students. Your responsibilities will include:
  1. Course Instruction: Deliver high-quality instruction to incarcerated students in various academic subjects, including but not limited to sociology, English composition, arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences, mathematics, technology, and health and wellness.
  2. Curriculum Development: Develop course materials and syllabi that align with the academic requirements of the program and meet the needs of diverse learners. Adapt teaching strategies to the correctional environment.
  3. Student Engagement: Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages active participation, critical thinking, and intellectual growth among incarcerated students.
  4. Assessment: Assess student learning through assignments, exams, and projects, providing timely feedback and support for improvement.
  5. Mentoring: Serve as an academic mentor and advisor to incarcerated students, guiding them in their educational journeys and helping them navigate academic challenges.
  6. Compliance: Ensure that all instructional activities comply with the policies and regulations of the correctional facility and Bowie State University.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • A Masters degree in the respective field (or closely related).
  • A Doctoral degree in the respective field (or closely related) is preferred.

Experience
  • Experience working at an HBCU, with historically marginalized/disenfranchised groups and/or incarcerated students is preferred.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated expertise and competence in the subject area.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Commitment to Commute: This position requires a strong commitment to commuting to the correctional facility where courses will be held. You will be an essential part of bringing education to incarcerated individuals, and your willingness to work within the correctional facility's environment is crucial to the success of the program.
