The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) Department of Music invites applications for an Adjunct Artist-Teacher of Voice. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate private voice lessons and a section of a vocal-arts-related course, such as “Diction,” starting the week of August 27, 2024.
Qualifications:
- Baritone or tenor strongly preferred.
- MM in vocal performance, vocal pedagogy, or other vocal specialization, with DMA preferred.
- A proven record of at least two years of successful collegiate-level studio teaching experience, including as a TA, for music majors/minors/non-music majors with both classical and musical theater repertoires.
- A proven record of successful collegiate-level classroom teaching, including as a TA, in lyric diction in Italian, German, French, and English using IPA.
- A proven record of successful collegiate-level classroom teaching in vocal pedagogy, including as a TA.
- Experience with planning, programming, and coaching undergraduate degree recitals and opera/musical theater role preparation.
- Piano skills commensurate with vocal exercises and simple accompaniment.
- The availability and commitment to teach in person during the 14-week semester on TCNJ’s campus (Ewing, NJ) regularly.
- The availability and willingness to participate in departmental activities such as entrance auditions and other recruitment-related events.
- Outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills, including timely communication in writing.
- A demonstrable record or potential for student recruitment in and beyond the region is desirable, as is involvement in professional organizations such as NATS.
Teaching Load:
The Fall 2024 semester runs from August 27 through December 6 on TCNJ’s campus (Ewing, NJ). Applied studio lessons are to be given weekly at mutually agreed upon dates between the instructor and students, teaching 13 weekly 50-minute lessons (25 minutes for non-vocal majors) for each student assigned in the instructor’s studio. Duties also include providing a studio syllabus, assisting in final performance evaluations for voice students (juries) during the final exam period, and attending degree recitals of students in the studio. Participation in entrance
auditions of prospective voice majors and voice-related recruitment events is a requirement of this position. The Diction class meets in person on Mondays and Thursdays between 9:30 and 10:50 am. The course teaching expectations for Diction include a current course syllabus, midterm grades, final grades, and administering the final exam during the designated final exam period.
