POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for the preparation, dispensing, and storage of medications and pharmaceutical supplies under the supervision of a physician and/or pharmacist. Assists with various patient care activities under the supervision of a physician and/or registered nurse.

SERVING THE PATIENT:

The Ad-Mixture Technician serves the MHO patient by ensuring the patient receives the right medication and the right dose of the medication. They ensure the medication is appropriate for the patient and is prepared according to the manufacturer provided instructions. The Ad-Mixture Technician makes sure the correct medications are ordered and are available for the patient at the time of their visit.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assures compliance with the Indiana State board of Pharmacy standards of practice and internal policies and procedures for preparation and handling of pharmaceuticals. Identifies and assists in resolving operational issues as needed to maintain compliance with the above referenced standards.
  • Reconstitutes and prepares medications in accordance with manufacturers’ guidelines. Monitors expiration dates and stores medications as directed by manufacturers’ guidelines.
  • Prepares IV fluids, IVP syringes and injection syringes containing antineoplastics and/or biologics in accordance with American Society of Hospital Pharmacists and Oncology Nursing Society guidelines. Adheres to safe handling practices as set forth by the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists and the Oncology Nursing Society.
  • Disposes of hazardous waste in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines. Maintains biological safety cabinet per institutional policy.
  • Maintains competency in appropriate dosage calculation techniques and acceptable dosage ranges for all medications prepared. Assists physician and/or registered nurse in calculating body surface area and chemotherapy dosages.
  • Assists with accurate inventory and billing by entering all medications prepared into the Lynx Mobile application as instructed.
  • Ensure the availability of clinic supplies by continually assessing the need for restocking and informing purchasing agent when inventory is low. Clinic supplies will include, but are not limited to IV insertion supplies, linens, beverages, and teaching materials. All of the above items will be reordered and restocked as needed.
  • Maintains cleanliness of chemo clinic by changing bed linens after each patient use, cleaning over-bed tables as needed, discarding hazardous waste trash and continually straightening the clinic environment throughout the course of a day.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Clinical Operations Manager.

  • Maintains professional behavior, confidentiality and discretion at all times, along with the ability to work with all levels of staff with a confident and professional demeanor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Pharmacy Technician Certification/Indiana Pharmacy Technician License is required. Minimum two years pharmacy technician experience, IV-admixture experience preferred. CPR certification.
  • Demonstrated competence in medication preparation, handling, and disposal techniques.
  • Accurately maintains and adheres to all safety rules and regulations.
  • Must have the ability to work with patients and family members in a confident, respectful, and socially professional manner.
  • Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field, and maintains all proper certifications, licenses, educational and safety requirements. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
  • Computer knowledge, including electronic medical record systems and Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment; prioritize tasks and workloads.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Clinic environment. Work requires sitting, standing, and/or walking in and around the clinic. Good manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination, along with the ability to read and comprehend written instructions. High traffic area dealing with patients, family members, other staff, and physicians. Interaction with others may be constant and interruptive. Requires working under stress. Working knowledge of computers, with the ability to type, operates a keyboard, calculate, and operate equipment common to the field. Ability and knowledge to perform professional care appropriate to a Pharmacy Technician. Knowledge of medical equipment and instructions. Skill in applying and modifying the principal methods, and techniques of primary care to provide ongoing patient care. A knowledge of common safety hazards and emergency situations. Skill in preparing and maintaining records, reports and responding to correspondence as needed. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with physicians, patients, family members, employees, and the public. Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines. May be required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch; lift and/or move patients. Frequent exposure to toxic substances, medical preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.

  1. Direct Manager: Director, Pharmacy
  2. Day to Day Lead: Daily Site Manager or Director, Pharmacy at Mishawaka Site
  3. Strategic Coach: Director, Pharmacy
