Your Opportunity

We are seeking an exceptionally talented and enthusiastic individual with a keen interest in the natural sciences to join our team in Texas (Austin, Houston, or Dallas).  In your position as a Biologist, you will utilize your knowledge and experience to perform bat acoustic surveys and analysis to support environmental services projects.  This position will include opportunities for both field and office work.

Our team members can be involved in a variety of projects that may include endangered species assessments, environmental impact assessment, habitat restoration, wetland characterizations, and water resources management. 

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Maintaining, managing, and deploying bat acoustic equipment which often requires travel and is seasonal in nature
  • Collecting, organizing, managing, and analyzing acoustic data, including but not limited to:
    • noise removal
    • species identification
    • activity index calculation
  • Troubleshooting and equipment diagnostics
  • Writing technical acoustic reports for client and regulatory agency review
  • Additional responsibilities may also include, but are not limited to:
    • conducting wildlife field surveys and habitat assessments for a variety of species using multiple survey techniques (e.g., avian point-count surveys, raptor nest searches, eagle use surveys, bat mist netting, and radiotelemetry)
    • performing wetland and habitat delineations
    • completing ecosystem restorations
    • writing other technical reports (i.e., survey summaries, risk assessments, conservation plans, etc.)
Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Demonstrated experience with, and knowledge of, bat acoustic analysis, including manual vetting and identification of Endangered Species Act-listed species (e.g., Indiana bat [Myotis sodalis])
  • Demonstrated aptitude in the R program
  • Working knowledge of bat survey techniques, conservation issues, and distribution and habitat requirements
  • Diligent observation skills a willingness to learn new skills while conducting fieldwork in rural or wilderness settings, and flexibility in work assignments
  • Ability to develop basic reports from field notes and data
  • Ability to work at a desk or in the field for long periods of time
  • Aptitude to follow instructions from project managers and biologists, interact effectively with coworkers, and to accept guidance and constructive criticism
  • Precise and thorough data management and organization
  • Must have a good driving record and a valid driver's license
  • Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
  • Familiarity with digital data collection methods such as ArcGIS Survey123 and ArcGIS Field Maps
Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in biology or related field from an accredited institution
3+ years of experience with bat acoustical data, monitoring, and management
Master's degree in biology or related field from an accredited institution is a plus
Experience using bat call analysis software (e.g., Kaleidoscope Pro and AnalookW Sonobat, BCID) Experience conducting bat capture and tracking surveys
Experience with collecting known call data
